the faculty is back from their retreat to the fancy resorts of cape cod and it's still very quiet at work. it will pick up eventually. friday i did nothing - and i mean that literally - i could've taken the day off and no one would have known - at least today wasn't that bad. and i did get out during lunch and breathe the fresh air.
my wifi went out friday night and stayed out until late sunday afternoon, by which point i'd gotten a tech scheduled for tuesday. i did not call back and cancel the tech because i don't trust comcast, and a good thing because the wifi went out again tonight. and because internet, phone, and cable are all bundled, i have to take advantage of the unsecured random wifi in the neighborhood to get anything done or anything watched. i have a sneaking suspicion the problem is the way the landlady hardwired the apartment for wifi, but we'll see. the tech should be here tomorrow thankfully not when i'll be in the middle of a meeting.
oh wait, now it's back. see my unimpressed face.
anyway. i watched the final season of peaky blinders (on my laptop >.< ) and i'm not sure how i feel about it. i was wondering how they were going to write out aunt polly, since the actress died last year, and i think the option they chose was very on-brand for the show. but i also wondered how they were going to end it, because tommy shelby isn't the kind of man who gets a happy ending, and i'm not sure how i feel about what they did. on the other hand,
alfie solomons! who is always a delight. he and tommy had such an interesting relationship - they were rivals and occasionally uneasy allies and associates and almost even friends. i think the longest relationship tommy had with anyone who wasn't a shelby and wasn't a peaky blinder was with alfie. i mean, he shot alfie in the face and four or five years later alfie is showing up on that tiny bootlegger island to tell tommy he got married, and tommy says he heard it was a nice wedding. and then they do some business. apparently there's going to be a movie in 2024 or something.
if you haven't watched this show i do recommend it altho fair warning it's about gangsters and there's a lot of violence. it's on netflix and is six short seasons.
on saturday my sister and i saw top gun: maverick which is very aware of itself as a sequel and also in a lot of ways very similar to the first one. there are some flashbacks to the first movie and a bunch of photos and the opening sequence is fighter planes and an aircraft carrier and kenny loggins' danger zone. that said, i liked it. it has some funny bits and the flying sequences are amazing - and were apparently done without cg or greenscreen, which, wow - and yes tom cruise is a little old for action movies but at the same time i didn't have high expectations so i could just kick back and go "wow, if i was flying that plane i'd have thrown up by now".
also it has jon hamm, who i can't see in anything without remembering neil gaiman's story about emailing him to play gabriel in good omens, and how jon hamm said yes and signed the email HAMM. because he signs everything that way. just his last name, all caps.
for previews we got baz luhrman's elvis movie, thor 4: more thor and yes i am going to keep calling it that (natalie portman's arms, jesus), a mission: impossible with hayley atwell! and it's just part 1 which means tom cruise will be hurting himself doing his own stunts for at least another couple years, and paws of fury which gave off very strong kung fu panda vibes except without jack black, but with samuel l jackson.
and sunday i went to two grocery stores because the first didn't have the right lentils (don't ask) and then sat outside for like three hours and finished bring up the bodies.
enjoy this story about man mountain dean, the american wrestler
who trained intelligence guys to fight during ww2.
it's time for the
uber lost and found index! ok, fess up - which one of you left your ball gag in the back seat of an uber? and also, how do you leave behind a metal leg? and grandma's dentures. wtf. the person who lost all those chicken nuggets is never getting them back, tho.
so chris evans is voicing buzz lightyear in lightyear, because of course he is, and dropped by disneyland to celebrate. and he is so awkward in the pictures that
he looks photoshopped. he's been a working actor for two decades and is still adorably awkward in photos and that's so unbearably charming i can't handle it.
