What I just finished reading:
the song of achilles which was tragic and romantic as expected and which i really liked.
What I am reading now:
the lost girls of paris, which i just started yesterday. i think i've met all three main characters and i'm wondering why we need the framing device. (a woman in 1946 finds an abandoned suitcase in grand central station - it's packed with ladies' clothes, a random pair of baby shoes, and a folder of photos of pretty young women, presumably the lost girls. she keeps the photos and i guess somehow figures out who they all are.) (the rest of the story is set during ww2.) i'm not super invested in any of the characters yet and the author does a lot of explanation - a character will react to something and then the narrative will explain why and what it means, as if the reader can't figure it out. this is kind of annoying. i want to know where the story is going, tho, and it's too early to be annoyed by the writing. it's about female radio operators and saboteurs in europe so i'm expecting a lot of supporting characters to die.
What I'm going to read next:
the galaxy, and the ground within, by becky chambers, and if not that, something else that's not a historical. i guess the song of achilles kind of counts as historical.
my landlady and her daughter are on vacation, so of course yesterday one of the smoke detectors in their apartment decided the battery was dying. it started beeping at noon and by eight-thirty (AT NIGHT) we determined, while on the phone with said landlady, that no one has spare keys to her place, so no one could come over and fix the thing. "can you hold out until tomorrow morning?" she asks, and me, my roommate, and the two girls who live upstairs (who had come down to tell us they tried and failed to pick the lock to her back door) all said NO. i mean, THE BEEPING. right under our bedrooms. the landlady called her brother who said he could come over this morning with a locksmith to let him into her place so he could fix the smoke detector. i called
tamalinn to ask if i could spend the night in her spare room. she said yes. fifteen minutes after i left one of the neighbors, like someone in the house next door, called the fire department because did i mention the beeping? since noon? and by now it's past ten. anyway, someone called the fire department which sent firemen who jimmed an a/c unit out of the landlady's window, climbed in the house, stopped the smoke detector, and stopped another alarm they triggered when they broke in. >.< and there was peace throughout the land.
seriously, who goes off on vacation and doesn't give anyone a spare key to their house, when they have tenants who live upstairs? i am disappoint.
on sunday friend r had a birthday picnic and i made
the world's best chocolate chocolate chip cookies for the first time in like two years. my favorite thing about being able to see people in person again is that i can bake for someone else. the weather was SO NICE and there were SO MANY DOGS OUT. it was lovely.
on saturday i saw an open house with tamalinn and friend a and then tamalinn's car died. >.< while we were waiting for aaa a couple walked down the sidewalk on the other side of the street with their dog, and tamalinn and friend a and i all went "doggie!" and the dog must have known we wanted to pet it because it pulled towards us, and its people crossed the street so we could say hi. doggie was a french bulldog named winston and he was VERY HAPPY to meet new people. also VERY CUTE and his people were very friendly.
and on friday i was working from home with the back door open for the breeze, and i heard this *tiktiktik* noise which i recognized as doggie toenails on a wood floor, and since i had the window open too i thought wow, sound carries, i wonder what the dogs are walking on outside. and then i felt something furry against my leg. o.O it was one of the landlady's daughter's dogs, who came up to say hi. so of course i petted her and asked her what she was doing in my house, and then tried to encourage her to go home. she was having none of it. so the landlady had to come up the back stairs to get her. i said she (meaning the dog) could come visit any time.
and that was my weekend. :D there were a lot of dogs.
i've completely lost track of what tv is on. i'm keeping up with what we do in the shadows and archer and what if...? and claws isn't coming back until december and other than that? no clue. what are y'all watching? what's good?
(i don't dislike what if...? but half the voices are different actors than were in the mcu and it throws me off every time. it's like uncanny valley voices. and the animation looks weird to me. i'm a big fan of the idea behind it, tho.) (and what we do in the shadows is just ridiculous and funny.)
the statue of liberty wears a size 879 shoe. you know, in case you want to buy her new sandals.
this is both terrifying and impressive as hell. there's a man. and an alligator. and a trash barrel. and no one gets bit.
