because i had today off work for columbus day/indigenous peoples day i was going to, you know, try to answer some questions for myself and do some serious thinking and planning for my nanonovel, and... i didn't. didn't think about my bang (which was a slight disappointment because thinking about it is fun even tho it has no plot, no conflict, no tension, no nothing), did vaguely contemplate a couple future vignettes for fate's plaything. in the before times i would've gone to a coffeeshop and had some caffeine and a baked good (or possibly lunch) and done some deep thinking (tm) but none of them are open for sitting inside and the weather was too crappy to sit outside. so i got nothing done. well, i made progress on my parents' anniversary cross stitch - just some backstitch and a french knot to go - but i had "YOU NEED TO SIT WITH YOUR NANONOVEL AND PLAN SOME SHIT" on my to-do list. one of the forum categories on the nano web site is for story development and honestly, i don't know why i don't just go over there.
anyway. that was my day. i didn't even leave the house, altho i did get dressed at a reasonable hour. (by which i mean, before lunch.)
my sister got let go from her job back at the beginning of april, and this past week she got a new job! at a place where she wants to work! which is very exciting. so we went out for brunch yesterday to celebrate. actual brunch, at an actual restaurant, with outdoor seating. i haven't been to brunch since the before times, possibly since last year. weather was good, food was delicious, i ate too much. >.< then we walked around a bit - i said the weather was good, didn't i - the restaurant was in the back bay, which is usually pretty crowded on sundays, except yesterday it wasn't. a lot of places are still closed, altho there were a bunch of stores and restaurants that were open. there just weren't a lot of people out. it was a little weird.
i've probably mentioned clover before - local chain, vegetarian/occasionally vegan, local produce - there's one in harvard square where i used to go after getting my comics, and i really miss their african peanut soup - anyway, all their locations are currently closed but they're doing meal boxes, and if you sign up for the mobile app you get $40 off your first order, so i got a meal box for two. (you can get them for two or four people.) they're normally way more than i usually spend on groceries, even taking into account the fact i don't have to cook, so the only reason i did it is because i got a discount. so far i've had falafel (twice), tomato-chickpea stew with basmati rice and impossible meat meatballs (twice), olive cake (twice), shortbread (once), lentil salad with dried cherries, kale, and hazelnuts (once), and a lot of hummus. the hummus is SO GOOD. also the pita bread is SO GOOD. they make their own, and it's thick and fluffy and delicious. i'm not 100% sold on the falafel or the impossible meatballs (texturally the meatballs are close but not quite, but they taste about right), and the tahini is a little tangier than i'm used to, but the pita bread, omg. so far it's definitely been worth the money, and not just because i don't have to do anything besides heat stuff up.
...i'm watching the wolverine and logan has just dragged this poor girl who was nearly killed on her wedding day into a modern love hotel in (i assume) tokyo which is played by the
nakagin capsule tower which is an apartment building that was built in the 60s and is currently falling apart. it is decidedly NOT a love hotel. i always get such a thrill from being able to recognize buildings in movies, especially when they're playing something totally different. this is kind of a dumb movie, otherwise.
anyway. last week i got my flu shot, took notes at lots of zoom meetings, edited captions for a webinar and a couple online tutorials, and probably some other stuff. work is just not that exciting. i'm still liking fargo. saw the first couple episodes of the new season of the great british baking show, and i can't get over how cute all the bakers are. they're all so nice to each other! everyone is just adorable. also discovered thanks to
ghost-light a show called taco chronicles, which is a kind of travel/food show about... tacos. shocker. each episode is about a different style of taco, and they're narrated by the taco in question. which is SO CUTE. also makes me want to go to mexico and stuff my face.
saturday night i tried to watch the haunting of bly manor for rahul kohli even tho i don't actually like haunted house tv. at the last scene i went "nope, nope, not for me" (yes it took the entire episode) and yesterday after brunch i may or may not have watched the second episode anyway. clearly the noping didn't take. >.< also it was the middle of the day and the sun was out and i can cope with haunted houses under those conditions. and i want to know what happens. and rahul kohli is the cutest and i'm weak. not sure if i can make it through the rest of the season, tho. i mean, haunted house stories freak me out. and no one ever turns on the lights in that house! they just wander around in the dark! i'd be flipping switches EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME.
i also rented wolf, starring marwan "why did they cut off your hair??" kenzari as an amateur boxer and thief of the smash&grab school. it's a dutch movie but i ended up with the dubbed version rather than subtitles. (not a fan. one of the voice actors sounded really familiar tho.) i enjoyed watching him for two hours but it wasn't that great a movie. it was black and white and i think it was going for whatever the cinematic version of "literary" is, but i kept thinking "oh, i've seen this before". it was pretty predictable.
