shine like thunder, cry like rain
i keep forgetting to mention, mostly so i remember when it happened, that mississippi is taking the confederate battle flag out of the state flag. (it's the last state flag with elements of the confederate flag in it.) state residents will vote on a new design in november.
today i did a whole lot of nothing at work, punctuated by a couple of very frustrating hours still trying to edit captions for the conference presentation from last year, which i feel like i've been working on for WEEKS. the actual presenters are fine - they're all from one of the groups i support so i know their voices, and most importantly they're all speaking into a microphone - but once someone in the audience asks a question, all bets are off. they mumble, they swallow their words, they speak too fast, they run their words together - and the youtube automatic captions don't pick up anything they're saying, so i have to decipher it. there's more than one caption that's just "audience: [unclear]". it's a mess.

how do you define an american icon? the brooklyn bridge? death valley? the everglades? the northernmost city in the country? (it's in alaska, natch.) a church service in a detroit suburb? route 66? twenty-two national geographic photographers share their opinions.
