has it been forever? it feels like it has

happy chinese new year, my lovelies! i only know it's today because a. the googledoodle is an animated banner with a super cute pig, and b. one of the tax associates brought in a large and random assortment of chinese sweets. also pocky, which i always associate more with japan. said sweets included ginger candy, candied ginger, coconut gummies, water chestnut gummies (faintly chestnutty in taste and texturally an odd combination of gummy and roasted chestnut), winter melon gummies (so sweet!), and what was basically candied carrot slices. of all the weird things. i had two. also sticky cherimoya candy, which was fruity in a way i absolutely cannot describe but the closest i can come is the durian turnovers wrenlet and i had at the dim sum place near her old house, a few years ago. i had two of those too. (i occasionally see cherimoyas in the grocery store, depending on which store i go to, and i always thought they were from central/south america, so i was confused but intrigued to see them as candy.) also also hard candy with a strawberry center, and little chocolate filled cookies with illustrations of pandas playing sports printed on them. i love foreign candy, altho there's always the possibility that i'm going to put something in my mouth that i don't want to leave there. (fortunately it did not happen this time.) it's the risk you run when the packaging is in a language you don't know, and no one can (or wants to) translate for you.

in less sugary food news, if you live near an aldi, or at least an american aldi, they're selling heart-shaped cheese for valentine's day. anyone can give their sweetheart a box of chocolates. if you really love someone (and they're not lactose-intolerant), get them cheese. :D

in other other news, i feel like it's been forever and i have no excuse. work is work - i was stuck at reception all day yesterday because the receptionist and the mail room guy were both out, and i had some very, very tedious work to do - but also we had a little super bowl party on friday so i had appetizers for lunch. (sliders, chicken wings, tiny quesadillas, an inadvisable number of taco chips. and a football shaped cookie, because of course.) and speaking of the super bowl, i didn't watch but i knew when it was over because i could hear people making noise out in the street. apparently it was the lowest-scoring super bowl ever, but one of the rams kicked the longest punt ever. so... go him? it was like 60º and sunny today, so the pats had good weather for their celebratory parade.

i signed up for spn-j2-bigbang and have started to think about panicking (if i could settle on a course of story events and stick with it i'd feel more secure). i've seen all but one of the oscar-nominated movies (just missing roma), which means in the past nine days i've seen on the basis of sex (pretty much every man in rbg's adult life was totally dismissive of her, except her husband who was genuinely supportive and encouraging and helpful and thought she was brilliant) (because she was) and the favourite (unlikable people vying for power under an ill-suited, occasionally depressed, immature, gout-ridden queen, but man were the clothes great) and blackkklansman (unsurprisingly political, because spike lee, a little surreal, and really good). i know on the basis of sex wasn't nominated for best picture, but i saw it, so i must mention.

if you live in a part of the us that was smacked by the polar vortex, i hope you and yours survived intact. i did not love waiting for the bus in single-digit weather, but at least it stayed above zero. the post office suspended delivery in a bunch of cities because it was so cold, they set the train tracks on fire in chicago to keep the rails from contracting and cracking, and a dude in minnesota froze an egg on the sidewalk. wtf. and tulsa has the midnight crocheter what crochets at midnight.

also apparently the midwest was colder than antarctica and siberia. again, wtf.

in tv news, i think i like deadly class altho i'm annoyed that for two of the three main female characters, their storylines currently revolve pretty much entirely around boys, which is boring (altho the music continues to be fabulous and nostalgic as hell). the scenes for next season for vikings made me go whut? china? really? you're sending ivar to china and back? i just. i can't with that. is anyone watching i am the night? if not, you're missing chris pine playing dissolute-but-trying-to-be-better, and connie nielsen playing crazy-privileged-and-possibly-just-crazy. it's apparently based on true events and real people, so at the end of each episode (well, the two so far) they show photos of the actual people that some of the characters are based on. it's interesting and faintly creepy, and chris pine's character's boss is played by leland orser, who i cannot watch in anything without remembering him in se7en, twitching in the police station.

and in nostalgic tv news, the cw has ordered a pilot for a potential series based on the lost boys. one thing about living in santa carla i never could stomach.... :D

vikings, i am the night, deadly class, new job second floor, it's fucking cold, super bowl, candy, movies, teevee, cheese
