(yesterday because the weather was awful i went over to my sister's house to watch avengers and the flamingo kid. the flamingo kid came out in 1984 when matt dillon was young and hot, and it's super cute.)

friday we had our end of year townhall whatever at work, in which we learn all the exciting things that happened in the region over the past year, what happened nationally in the past year, and what fun and exciting things are planned for the coming year. (our fiscal year starts in august. it's weird to do year-end stuff in july.) it's very rah-rah don't-you-love-working-here. every year it's in a different hotel, and this year's hotel was about twenty-five minutes' walk from the office. in the heat. >.< i walked with the tax interns, who are all young and resilient. we had lunch, followed by the presentations, followed by a sundae bar and a drinks bar. i made a beeline for the sundae bar. everyone else lined up for drinks. priorities. :D i ate an inadvisable amount of ice cream, but whatever, i also walked back to the office. in the heat. >.< but! i got to leave early. :D

i randomly found a tank top in my drawer today that i did not remember i had. surprise!

have some links. i've been collecting.

this is now old news, but scientists found water on mars. it's a lake almost a mile under the martian south pole.

meet the sherpa of new york.

wealthy art dealer buries a literal treasure chest somewhere in the mountains. wealthy art dealer publishes a poem of clues as to where it is. online community grows up around people trying to find the thing. occasionally someone dies.

you know those little plastic tables that come in takeout pizza, to keep the top of the pizza box away from the top of your pizza? a canadian chain started putting tiny chairs in the pizza boxes to go with the little tables. so cute!

here's an interview with billy porter, who was on pose. (which i recommend!)

an eighty-year-old south african woman got ticked off about the then-president's cars, so she promised to drive her twenty-year-old toyota to buckingham palace to have tea with the queen. she got all the way through africa before bogging down in egypt. who says eighty-year-old ladies don't know how to have fun? :D

novel based travel posters. the poster for the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy has a pot of petunias on it. that cracks me up.

a shark was, er, sharknapped from an aquarium in texas, and the folks who took it snuck it out in a stroller.

enjoy some photos of the blood moon from space. (there was an eclipse last week.)

an ancient public library was discovered in germany. they figured out it was a library from the niches in the walls, sized to hold, you know, scrolls.

back in the day women used to make clothes out of feed sacks, because feed sack fabric was cheaper than actual clothing fabric. you were already buying giant bags of chicken feed or flour, so you may as well put the sack to another use when it was empty. mills figured this out and started printing their sacks with stylish patterns (scroll down), with the brand name printed in easily-washed-out ink. eventually heavy-duty paper sacks took over - they were cheaper to make - and the feed sack dress fell out of custom. my favorite pic is the one of the guy holding a flour sack printed with a pattern to make a stuffed bunny (which is wearing overalls, natch).

sharks, new job second floor, historical clothes, cool shit, outer space, cute shit, little old ladies are the best, pose, archaeological nifty
