What I just finished reading:
the iron dragon's daughter, and i forgot how many unlikable characters were in it. the main character vacillates between unlikable and vaguely sympathetic - a lot of shit happens to her but she manages to survive it - but a lot of the supporting characters are cruel, careless, petty, manipulative assholes, and after a while reading that is kind of a trial. on the other hand, i liked the worldbuilding and i especially like the way michael swanwick basically expects you to figure out a lot of it yourself.
What I am reading now:
princesses behaving badly, by linda rodriguez mcrobbie, which is what it sounds like - potted biographies of historical princesses who, say, led rebellions and manipulated their way to the throne and plotted and planned and had sex parties and, uh, got accused of witchcraft, or went crazy. so far i've only heard of three - khutulun (the wrestling princess, and kublai khan's niece), isabella of france (altho pretty much everything i knew about her i learned from braveheart which meant it was mostly wrong), and hatshepsut. i'm learning some fun stuff, altho to be honest almost none of these ladies had anything remotely approaching a happy ending. but they got shit done.
What I'm going to read next:
i ordered a book of short stories - this is paradise, by kristiana kahakauwila - from the bookstore and it came in yesterday, so that.
so we were supposed to get a nor'easter, right? with variable amounts of snow in the greater boston area. towns called snow emergencies, afternoon/evening classes were canceled, and so far... nothing. hmph.
one of the things i love about the magicians is that it can be so weird and surreal and cute.
bunnies as radish smugglers, and alice 23 living with them because they can't pack the boxes themselves. i loved that.
i felt bad for josh 23 - he's seen some shit - and i guess penny is kind of an asshole in every timeline. the two joshes together were super cute, tho. margo slapping eliot to get him to pull himself together was very her. (they're my favorite in every timeline.) and i wasn't expecting quentin to be the beast! surprise.
mostly liked timeless - the episode was kind of about something i know something about, just not in the time period i know about it - and lucy's hair was cute and period-appropriate. the time travel and alternate timelines make my head hurt, tho. why does everything have to be so convoluted?
you have to see these house pics. fair warning: once seen, they cannot be unseen.
frank lloyd wright's larkin administration building was finished in 1906 and demolished in 1950.
you can still go inside. sort of.
my bigbang is 17k and i am so. far. behind. i know i can fix it in edits, and it doesn't have to be good, it just has to be done, but still. i don't want to have to rush the ending. i still don't know how it ends, and i still don't have a title. why is this so hard? at least i like writing it. it's kinda fun.
