...I don't really have an "or else" for that.
Dude, Harvard. That's awesome and terrifying! (Aliens scare me).
Yay, Bang! Good job wordcount! If all else fails on figuring out beginnings, I am fond of just shoving people straight into the action and then letting the reader know what's going on over time. First story I ever wrote started with running like hell from a monster.
Um, death/afterlife stuff. I don't really have a "I learned this here!" thing, unfortunately. I could not tell you what folklore or tradition gave me the things I like. I like the idea of coexistence and perfection--we become better than we currently are, and part of that is the ability to transcend petty, and even major, grievances. We get to MOVE ON. I think that everyone's afterlife is probably going to be different and unique, because everyone wants different things, but that those afterlives will be harmonious.
One constant is that everyone gathers for dinner. That dinner might look completely different for everyone, but everyone gets to eat what they want, as much as they want, for as long as they want, and nobody leaves starved for anything. Really, the dinner is symbolic; the afterlife is where all your needs are met, in abundance. I'm not interested in an afterlife without conflict, because that's incredibly boring, but I like legends where those conflicts aren't about Real World shit. They're not about basic respect and dignity, safety and survival. They're about whether or not you like purple leopard print and your partner has to build you an extension on the house so you can have that room far away from them.
I also *really* love ancestor worship. Not worshipping, like deification, but calling on them for guidance and information and assistance. I like the idea that we get to keep helping. And of *those* sets of things, I'm really fascinated by the interplay of the Erzulies in voudon. I don't know who she was in life, but the lady's got three husbands now and a continual frictive/protective relationship with her sister. She's got a damned rich life.
I don't know, do those count as what you're looking for? Crap. Sorry.

i haven't eaten the tortellini yet and even tho i'm not hungry (i had the leftover chinese for dinner), i want them. it's not even shark week and i want to eat everything in sight. >.<
i am in fact kind of concerned that i'm not starting the story close enough to the action, except if i did that, there isn't enough action for 20k words. my first bang had about 9k of intro, which was a little less than a third of the whole fic. but the ending didn't go on and on, and so far the ending of this one does. ugh, writing. why so hard?
i was mostly interested in particular stories from like, mythology or fairytales or folklore, rather than your personal vision of the afterlife, but i have to say, i kinda like the idea of everyone gathering for dinner and getting to eat whatever makes them happy. that makes your comment half food. :D
