on the way home from the bus stop tonight i saw a woman taking a picture of her two kids in the gas station parking lot, which was a little weird, but the kids were super cute - a little girl dressed as captain america in a skirt, and a slightly-less-little boy dressed as iron man, except carrying mjolnir. (i admit i wondered if the dog was supposed to be thor, but they'd left him at home.) SO CUTE. my second-favorite thing about halloween is all the little kids in costume.
my first-favorite thing, of course, is the candy. :D there were reese's peanutbutter cups and bite-sized three musketeers in the lobby at work. yum.
how about a wincon write-up? better late than never, yes?
friday!
get up at the butt-crack of dawn (ie, 4:15). cab driver: "what's in pittsburgh?" me: "hockey?" make it to a. pittsburgh, and b. the hotel in one piece. recognize the football stadium from the airplane from the dark knight returns, am also amazed at how hilly and tree-y the place is. it's very pretty from the air. fortunately run into
wrenlet in the hotel lobby (her: "text me when you know where your room is!" me: "i'm rooming with you!"), register, haul stuff up to the room, say hi to
beadslut and
jenna_thorn (roommates #3 and #4), go to opening ceremonies and marvel at all the people who raise their hands for "raise your hands if this is your first wincon". drift off to the jupiter ascending roundtable, which tangents kind of a lot but they're mostly related tangents so it's ok. there's squee. that's ok too. :D go out to get lunch with wren and someone else but i don't remember who, bring it back to the hotel, wren forgets to ask for a fork when we're getting food and has to hunt one down in the hotel. i eat my burrito and say nothing. go to the page to screen panel, discuss movie and tv adaptations of books and comics. share my opinion of constantine the movie vs constantine the tv show vs hellblazer. good panel, discussion is lively, fun is had. watch the vid show at some point, enjoy lots of vids in fandoms i don't follow, plus a fun fandoms-then-and-now vid from
deirdre-c. drag my sorry butt up to the room to shower but not nap, eventually meet a giant group for the ghost tour and dinner. sit at the end of the table with wren and
colls and
exsequar and her friend whose name i don't remember and i think
nwhepcat and talk about killjoys! and some other things. but killjoys! manager (or assistant manager?) comes over to apologize for how long it's taking to bring out our food. us: "huh?" *look at watches and phones* "wow, it's been an hour." time flies when you're chatting with fangirls. we get our food, mine is good, we get beignets and sorbet for both tables on the house. also good. ghost tour is fun - weather is cold >.< - guide is very, er, actor-y. he definitely knows how to tell a story. only one really creepy ghost, which is fine. so much better than the orlando tour. get back kinda late, put jetlagged and sleep-deprived ass to bed.
saturday!
do not sleep late. >.< go to mcd's for breakfast. today is the day in the life for
ditl, so i take pictures of things i wouldn't normally take pictures of. like my sausage and egg biscuit. shuffle down to the fandom lounge (which i have finally stopped calling the roadhouse) to finish the book i made for the very nice person who pledged for it for the indiegogo campaign last year. go to the mcu panel, for which i am a panelist - me: "i'm cindy, and thor is my favorite avenger." handsome space labrador golden retriever. good panel, lively discussion, some squee, some comments about ant man (positive!), no bitching about the winter soldier's hair, go me. walk out of the room and then walk right back in (it was a big room, it had two doors) for my own panel, figure out i'm in the wrong room, go next door to the right one. >.< at least i'm not late. discuss period tv shows, realize i forgot to get my top hat in honor of eva from hell on wheels. super grateful to
no-detective and
audrey1nd, my fabulous co-panelists. lively discussion, some pimping of tv shows. (
ladycat777 at every opportunity: "watch the last kingdom!") possibly i talk too much. >.< take a lunch break! hotdogs! (the restaurant is called franktuary. hee.) i got vinegar slaw and pierogis on mine. yum. back for the agent carter panel, which i am also a panelist for. "i'm [panelist], and i love peggy carter." there's lots of squee. go to last panel, which i am NOT a panelist for, finally, to talk about and rec non-superhero comics. then out for dinner with wren and
poisontaster and
quietdiscerning, eat noodles, sit with a couple of girls who are enjoying their first wincon. they're adorable. then dress for prom! jenna laces me into my corset, which requires her to put her foot in my back and yank. there are two wedding receptions in banquet rooms on the mezzanine, which is where the prom is, so there's these wedding guests in their fancy clothes, and us. in our fancy clothes. :D prom has a captain america standee and a buffy and a spike and i think a nick fury and i think a black widow. steve gets most of the love. dance some, sit around a lot, feel kind of old because the party goes to one and i just want to take off my boots and my corset and lie down. >.< spend quality time complimenting people on their hair/shoes/clothes.
cathybites, the dj, plays spirit of the west's home for a rest, apparently unprompted by any of the canadians in the audience, and i freak the fuck out [1]. learn that beadslut won the book i made for the raffle. i do not win anything. :( there's some really cool stuff at the raffle. stay until the bitter end of prom just so i can scream along to carry on wayward son with everyone else. and now i can go back to the room and take off my boots and corset and go to sleep, because i am old. :D
sunday!
after overpriced hotel buffet breakfast, pile into colls' car with her and beadslut and jenna and
chemm80 and drive to
fallingwater like the frank lloyd wright fangirls we are. (well, i am, anyway.) meet up with
rivers-bend and
vorpalblades at the house. sights are seen, steps are hiked, pictures are taken, stories about the house and wright and the kaufmanns are told. tiny hallways and narrow doorways are squeezed through. finish the tour, walk outside, and IT'S SNOWING. >.< i am not emotionally prepared. head back to pittsburgh, stop for lunch at veryvery local roadside diner type place. enjoy very buttery (the way it's supposed to be) grilled cheese for lunch, take piece of pumpkin pie to go. watch retrospective vid show with wren, and the reactions of the girls sitting behind us are at least as good as the vids. sit through closing ceremonies, probably say goodbye to a couple people, head off to see the martian with
chaneen and
saintawesome and
isweedan and a couple other folks whose online names i don't know. (one of them is going to see crimson peak which is at the same theater at about the same time.) enjoy it thoroughly. go back to the hotel, discover my roommates are next door playing cards against humanity. join them for two hands, everybody breaks up so folks can go to sleep. end up chatting with beadslut and chemm80 until latelate.
monday!
wander all over the place with a bunch of people acquiring breakfast. say goodbye to some people. have lunch (turkey burger, tasty fries) with river and
miss morri (it's her first wincon), hang out with them and hepcat and
nickelmountain until the shuttle arrives. say goodbye some more. kill time in the airport, make it home in one piece, watch minority report, go to bed.
tuesday!
return to the real world. sigh.
well that was long. you can skip to saturday and read about it
here. (i got permission to post the pics of people.) this year was the last wincon - the con com is rebranding it as confabulation, and the first confabcon might not be until 2017 - and i'm glad wren was there, because she is my enabler in all things and everything is her fault she's the reason i went to the first winchestercon, and i'm glad pt was there, because she's the first person i met and got fangirl all over (and she was very gracious when i did it, too). i got to meet some new people, which is always good, and i got to hang out with people i like who i saw last year, and i got to hang out with people i like who i haven't seen in a bunch of years. and in 2017 when it's confabulation time, you should all come. :D
[1] millions of years ago, after i graduated from college, i went to london on a student work visa and met a bunch of canadians, who were all fans of the tragically hip and barenaked ladies and spirit of the west. when i got home i had to mail-order the sotw album i wanted from canada. i haven't heard any of their songs in public since 1993, and would never have expected to do so at the wincon prom.
