o the inconstant moon

yesterday my sister and i went apple picking, and even tho the orchard didn't have cider doughnuts (MEDIOCRE), i did come home with half a peck of macintosh and macoun apples, which is somewhere between five and seven pounds. which makes a lot of applesauce, which is currently sitting on my kitchen counter cooling off so i can put most of it in the freezer.

i made it in the crock pot. i don't think it has enough cinnamon, but the fact that i could dump everything in the crock pot, set the timer, and leave it alone is really pleasing to me. also, all that applesauce smells really good.

afterwards we went to my sister's house to watch 22 jump street, which was both stupid and funny as hell. channing tatum makes up for a lot.

today i learned that edward gorey was a big golden girls fan. as in, he taped all the episodes. one of the guys who works at my comic shop has a friend who worked (or still works?) at the edward gorey house on cape cod, and when he started, his first task was to catalogue all of gorey's vhs tapes, including a shit ton of golden girls. i love that.

on my walk today i passed a house with a squash vine growing out front, with a tiny squash on it.

tiny squash!

and tonight was the blood moon super moon eclipse, so i went outside a bunch of times to see its progress and to try and take some pictures. i don't think any of them came out all that well, but it was dark and i need a tripod. the blood moon was so cool. well, the actual eclipse was neat too, but the red just made it extra spooky. this particular full moon is the harvest moon, also known as the comanche moon because supposedly it's when the comanche liked to conduct their raids on texan settlers.

(at one point texas settlers were so freaked out about the comanche that a bunch of them packed their bags and headed back east. the comanche managed to push the frontier back.) (it didn't stick, but for a brief period they managed to halt white folks' inexorable westward expansion.) (your random historical factlet for the day. :D )

this is what the eclipse would look like from the moon, if there was someone on the moon to see it.

speaking of space, check out this scale model of the solar system out in the nevada desert.

godzilla high heels - because woman cannot live on space alone. sometimes she needs a really ridiculous pair of shoes.

moist owlettes bathing owls, for those of you who like the wols. they're so cute and weirdly fluffy.

sarlacc cupcakes, if you don't feel up to making a sarlacc bundt cake. two of my favorite things - cupcakes and nerdery.

tiny produce, star wars, historical record, baked goods, cooking, fun with my sister, outer space, wols, shoes, weekend wrapup, edward gorey
