yesterday i went to new york for the day to a. scout potential fic locations, b. buy some
bialys, and c. hang out with
dear-tiger. i accomplished c. (there's a bagel place near my sister that apparently makes bialys, so i don't have to go to new york for them.) (are there non-new yorkers out there who are familiar with the bialy? can you even get them outside major metropolitan areas with lots of jews?) i walked around a lot and saw the new world trade center and took a bunch of pictures and made the mistake of going into the macy's in herald square to pee. the macy's in herald square is like the flagship macy's (it's the macy's from miracle on 34th street, if you've seen that movie), which means it's huge and old and FULL OF TOURISTS OH MY GOD. like, there were people standing just inside the doors taking pictures of the place. but they have four ladies' rooms, and did i mention i had to pee? and giant department stores are usually good for public (ie, you don't have to buy something first) bathrooms. and the holiday decorations were very pretty. and it still has some of the old wooden escalators, which are slower than modern metal escalators but have way more character. and then i went to meet tiger who is just as adorable in person as she is on lj, and we sat and chatted and she made fun of my need to research ridiculous shit. but still, it was really nice to meet her in person. eventually i'll have to go back - i mean, fic location scouting! touristing! and it's only four hours on the bus.
i did pass a no-doubt-pretentious coffeehouse called jack's, but i did not go inside to see if they had a skinny blond asthmatic barista with an insomniac best friend with pedestrian taste in coffee.
today i did a lot of nothing and it was fabulous, and then my sister and i saw the hunger games: mockingjay pt 1, which i liked a lot even tho most of the end was really tense.
a thing i noticed: as the movie goes on, effie looks more and more decorated and her clothes look more and more, er, designed, and less and less like everyone else's district 13 coveralls. she looks more and more like herself.. so far it's much more satisfying as a trilogy finale than the battle of the five armies. as a bonus, the theater was new and had fancy-ass assigned seating with reclining chairs. comfy!
the topic for december 27 for the month of babble is if i was a teacher, what subject would i teach, and what age/other demographic would my students be, for
desertport, and i'm pretty sure at this point the only thing i'd want to teach is history. i don't really want to be an english teacher, and i don't know enough about anything else. and i like history! history is basically one long story with about a million plot threads and a terrifyingly long cast of characters, and telling stories is my favorite thing. and i think high schoolers, because they're old enough that we can discuss the weird shit and i can set them straight about stuff they learned as middle schoolers or in elementary school that was wrong.
