that was visual

tonight i left work early so i could see only lovers left alive, which is a weird, weird movie. but i liked it a lot. it looked fabulous, all dark and cluttered and old and frayed and falling apart. the audience laughed at some things that weren't really funny - altho some of them were kind of darkly funny or kind of ironic - and i wanted ( Read more... )

Okay, nice guys I would say :D.
The guardians-poster is supercute! And the legos ...the octopus and the dragons are sooo cute! At least *I hope* that stuff washed up at the shore doesn't hurt the fishes. Don't know about the container ...

nice guys and totally comfortable being naked in front of a camera. :D evidently their calendar raises a lot of money, altho i'm not at all surprised.

isn't the poster adorable? i'm still kind of iffy on the movie - i mean, it looks dumb - but some of the posters are really nice.

i didn't link to legos.... altho i did read about the ones washing up onshore, and i also hoped the fish weren't eating them! the container probably sank.

But... but ... it IS a psychological horror thriller?

Thank you.

That dude belongs in a horror movie. Or you know, jail. Honestly if the story had any idea how fucking gross and creepy it was, it might actually be interesting. This way its just viscerally appalling.

That's bc "all women secretly want to be submissive to men"- actual quote from the author.

You know, I'm super excited when a fandom author makes good. I don't even really give a damn if they're supposedly horrible as a person, ie CC. But this is so absolutely disgusting on so many levels that I truly hope this godamn movie tanks so we don't have to get TWO FUCKING MORE.

"this naked firehose situation is happening for a reason" !! i may not stop laughing all day :D

I freaking love Jim Jarmusch movies. I sat at Only Lovers with this huge smile across my face from the minute that spinning record morphed with the stars... so visually beautiful throughout. So glad you got to see it in the theater! Films that are tonally dark like that are harder to watch on the small screen.

... John Hurt is getting a lot of work these days!!! who's his agent???

i know! man, hot naked dudes with a sense of humor, what more could you want?

the opening scenes with the spinning made me kind of nauseous, and i was SO GLAD they were short. it really was a stunning looking movie - it looked as if someone put a lot of thought into the set design and the costumes and the photography and everything. (and the hair! adam and eve and ava all had the same kind of hair, that kind of longish thickish unkemptish mop. and i loved the contrast between ava's super contemporary wheelie suitcase and her vintage clothes, and adam's obsolete tech that he'd managed to hook up so he could basically skype on his ancient crt tv, while eve used her iphone. and their drives through detroit! that poor city, it's like the poster child for urban abandonment and decay. but it fit the story beautifully.)

i didn't even know john hurt was in it! i was so surprised and pleased! god bless his agent, whoever they are.

(i think but am not sure that the only other jim jarmusch movie i've seen is mystery train, which i ( ... )

i'm so glad i'm not the only one who felt that way. knobs! dials! switches! tiny blinking lightbulbs! and when the power goes out so they go outside so he can fix the dynamo generator thing in the ground? hnngh.

I saw Only Lovers Left Alive as an illustration of "insisting on intervening when your lover is down is dubious, dragging your crazy sister along so she destroys his life as he can totally predict she will is bad, and directing so much energy and focus into this that you don't notice your own life falling apart without you is really bloody stupid." This has led to conversations with people I care about who think its lovely and romantic being somewhat fraught. (I think a lot depends on whether you parse him obtaining the bullets as "OMG actually intends to kill himself" or "checking the exits as a coping mechanism for depression", the latter being how it read to me as that is a thing I have been known to take comfort from when fighting off depression.)

i don't know if i'd call it lovely and romantic, altho i did like their relationship and i think there was romance in it - well, there was love, anyway - even tho yeah, eve should've maybe listened to adam about her sister, and how ava's visit played out was a bit of a train wreck that anyone could see coming. she was kind of bullheaded in her attempts to cheer him up and get him out of the house and get him to, er, live a little (and seriously, an undead vampire telling her undead vampire husband to live! cracked me up with the irony), and i did kind of want to yell "he wants to stay home! let him stay home!" at the screen once or twice.

i wasn't sure if adam bought the bullet intending to use it or just to have it in case one day he wanted to use it, but i think how you read that depends on your own experience (or lack thereof) with depression.

That trailer was SO bad. And it's sad, too, because I love Sam's work - I think she's a really good director - but there's only so much you can do with the source material. At least the color palette was really nice.

maybe she can make something decent out of it? maybe? at least the trailer looked polished and professional, which is evidently more than the book ever was.

True dat. I'll be interested in reading the reviews when it comes out to see what the finished product is like.
