What the hell is a dutch oven?

Dutch Oven started out as a deep, wide, covered cast iron pot. The idea being that you could put coals under it and over the lid, creating a miniature oven in an era when ovens were scarce and people cooked over open fires or in fireplaces.

In a modern sense, it's the big pot that came with your pot set. For people with a cookware kink, it's a specialty pot with heavier walls and bottom to hold in the heat like the cast iron cousin. It also must be able to go in the oven - no plastic handles. You can sear in it as well as do long slow cooking. Besides the searing, you can do quicker stove top cooking than can be achieved via a crock pot.

i always think of it as the cast iron pot with a lid that you can put in the oven, rather than the big pot that came with my cookware set. (which has plastic handles so i can only put it on the stove anyway.) i think they're really cool in a cooking gadget kind of sense, but i don't feel a need to buy one because i wouldn't use it.

A crockpot cooks things out of the oven and is especially useful when you don't want to turn on the oven (say, and heat up the whole kitchen). Crockpots also cook things for many, many hours (low and slow). Otoh, a dutch oven does go in the oven, using more energy and potentially heating up the kitchen. I wouldn't want to leave the oven on for 6 hours, for example, when I could just use my crockpot.

And yeah, I totally have both. ::beams::

Everything you just said. They are VERY different items, and used for different things. Also, you can't put a crockpot in an oven.

if i'd actually thought my question through i might have answered it for myself. >.< i mean, i know you can't put a crockpot in the oven because that's the whole point. it just seems like two different ways to do kind of the same thing. the fact that they're not necessarily two different ways to do the same thing may say something about how much i know about cooking. ahem.

dutch ovens are so cool but i have no place to store one.

Crockpots and dutch ovens are very different, at least that's what I thought. You can sear in a dutch oven and either cook in the oven or over the stove and which you choose will result in a different dish. There is a lot of overlap though. (I only used a crockpot a few times, I didn't like it much). I am well over 30 and don't see the need for matching towels or good china. A decent set of dishes for when you're having a bunch of people over is always nice to have, but who really cares if it all matches? If they consider a good couch a comfortable couch then I agree. Having a place for naps or for folks to crash if they want is a good thing.

I haven't watched the Hannibal yet, I'm not sure I will. I love the characters and overall what they are doing, but where just too many plotholes and bzuh moments in S1. I might seek out a detailed plot summary or something instead.

the list also included fresh flowers and candles that you actually burn (as opposed to what? decorative candles?). which, really? who NEEDS fresh flowers and candles to burn? unless "fresh flowers" includes "plants in pots", of which i am a fan. they don't die as fast as cut flowers so you don't have to buy new ones every week. i agree about the couch, tho. if it's good to nap on it's a good couch.

hannibal might be summed up by "hannibal is pretending he isn't THE WORST but will is getting a clue, altho it's taking everyone else a little longer". also, the food looks AMAZING. i keep thinking s1 would be well served by a marathon viewing - i think the plot might be less holey but that might be wishful thinking - but i don't think i could take it in concentrated doses like that.

Lagertha is THE best. But there was a sad lack of Athelstan. Although maybe he'll offer to warm Ragnar's bed now that Queen L's left. :D

i think he got one line. ONE. hmph. and i think aslaug is going to be warming ragnar's bed from now on, and i'm not sure how interested she is in sharing. hmph again. altho maybe she'll take a liking to the monk and we'll get our threesome. :D

i love lagertha. and i think she might be able to do better than ragnar.

Yeah, but Aslaug's pregnant, so how interested is Ragnar really going to be in sex with her once she really starts to get big? Perfect timing for our favorite monk to slip right in. Although, honestly, Athelstan should have just left with Lagertha & been her kept boy.

i totally agree with you about athelstan and lagertha. i mean, they actually like each other! and we know she's more than willing to sleep with him, and now that he seems to be more viking than not, he should theoretically be more willing to sleep with people, period. she'd boss him around and he'd be bossed and it would be good for both of them.

Gillian Anderson is SO GOOD in Hannibal. All of her scenes are amazingly tense, and she has this demeanor of rock-solid ice with an undertone of pure terror in every moment. I don't know how she does it when basically all she does is TALK, barely even moves, but it's fantastic.

she's amazing. because yeah, she comes across all solid and calm and underneath she's freaking out, and all you ever see her do is sit and talk to hannibal. and i keep watching her thinking wow, scully, look who you've become.
