mmm, cookies
i was tasked with bringing a dessert for thanksgiving, so because someone is already bringing a pumpkin pie and i think my cousin is bringing an apple pie and no one likes carrot cake but me, i went with sugar cookies shaped like turkeys, and i planned to ice them with the kind of hard shiny icing that you sometimes get on grocery store cookies. and then i couldn't find a turkey cookie cutter. >.< but i did find a pumpkin! last night i made the dough - it has to chill for a number of hours - and today i baked and iced, and now there are three dozen pumpkin-shaped orange-iced cookies sitting on my counter. (i have no idea how long the icing takes to harden, but i'm going to let them sit a little longer before i pack them up.) they don't look quite how i planned - the icing isn't shiny enough and i was going to paint the pumpkin stems brown but i ran out of icing just making them all orange - but they taste good. i used the "rich roll cookie" recipe from the joy of cooking, and they made my kitchen smell like cinnamon. yum.
(oddly enough, the recipe said it made six dozen. i do not have six dozen cookies. i am ok with this. i don't have enough cooling rack for six dozen anything.)
in other news, i've now seen the pilot and second episode of almost human, and i like it. i like dorian and i think he and john are cute together, and i really really like lili taylor. the worldbuilding is pretty cool and the show just looks really nice. i expect to continue watching. :D
totally missed the dr who special yesterday, but i'm going to go out on a limb and assume it was a good show. yesterday was also the 50th birthday of where the wild things are. i'd say maurice sendak and the good doctor are both in good company.
last night the parental unit took me out for sushi for my birthday and we sat in an enclosed booth, and my mom was making sure my dad was ok with the bench (there was no cushion on it like chairs have), and she said in response to some question from my sister that my dad gets "cold and hard". i apparently turned red i was laughing so hard. the sushi was yummy, but it always is. and my sister got me the avengers on dvd for my birthday. :D
