first, happy late birthdays to
desertport and
embroiderama! i thought of you both on sunday! (because port, i didn't see you AT ALL.) if you didn't get cake then, you should have cake now. :D
dancing boys: *conga*
so i'm home from wincon, obviously. last night i got home, called my parents (altho my mom was out, so i kind of babbled at my dad for a bit, poor dad), unpacked (ie, dumped all my clothes in the hamper), watched some stupid tv, went to bed. totally missed sleepy hollow, assume it's still batshit. also missed elementary, assume it's still pretty fabulous.
should i do a wincon recap?
i feel like i should do a wincon recap. it will probably be a lot of "and then i hung around the fandom lounge and talked to people, but i don't remember who or what we talked about". like, i eventually got to the hotel on thursday, found
beadslut and
chemm80 - roommates 1 and 2 - sat in the room, left the room, ate at a mexican restaurant in the hotel (they had tamales!), sat around the fandom lounge until it was time to do registration, sat at the registration table and handed out swag bags and gave people the important bits of information about same - "there's a lanyard for your name tag, there are some chocolate poker chips, and the program is still being printed" - and told everyone to eat my cookies. which they did!
quick tangent so i can go HOLY SHIT at sons of anarchy. and now awww.
ok, better. i have absolutely no recollection of what i did on thursday after registration except i'm sure there was hanging around and talking to people but i don't remember who, and eventually i ended up in one of the hotel bars with
chemm80,
colls, and
lightthesparks, until it was time to put my happy ass to bed. i didn't sleep that well but whatever, i never do at wincon.
can i just mention, the hotel was in a casino, or there was a casino in the hotel, because vegas, and it smelled overwhelmingly of cigarette smoke. by the end of the weekend i was pretty sure i smelled like cigarette smoke too. also, they do not want you to get where you're going unless where you're going is towards a bank of slot machines. so easy to get lost, seriously. but the thing i really couldn't get over was the rows of armchairs with cupholders in the arm rests, which were lined up in front of a bunch of tvs and giant boards showing all the games for sports betting. you could sit in an armchair and drink your drinks and just place bets and watch football all day.
on friday i got some fangirl on
glockgal, bought a bunch of raffle tickets, successfully paneled on the serial killers panel which was more of a discussion - it was a good one! i learned stuff! and we talked about why americans are so enamored of serial killers and why so many of them seem to be white guys and what made aileen wuornos different - and went to caesar's palace to eat at gordon ramsey's english pub type restaurant for dinner. which was yummy. and crowded. and there were seventeen of us, so they had to put us at two tables. after that we walked to the bellagio to see the fountain in front, which personally made me feel kind of ocean's 11. it was pretty neat. but wow, a lot of walking. at least the casinos were decorated interestingly. they're kind of swank.
oh, and i watched the vid show, because i always watch the vid show, and there were some nice vids, including one for haven! and orange is the new black, and a movie i never heard of starring campbell scott, and the oc, and of course a bunch for spn, and one for hawaii five-0 that was just the cutest.
i don't remember what i did saturday! besides the actor rpf panel, in which i may or may not have talked a lot - and i did get to meet the mod beforehand, and it was her first wincon AND her first time modding a panel, but she was totally fine and kind of adorable and i can't remember her name >.< - and beadslut and i think chemm80 (or colls? someone i know, anyway) sat in front to heckle/play devil's advocate, and it was overall a good panel. i admitted in public that i do bigbang for a. the audience, and b. the art, and i blamed
wrenlet for my interest in rps in the first place because she is my enabler in all things and everything is her fault. i might have gotten some fangirl on
dauntdraws or that could've been on friday. (it was a "get fangirl on artists" kind of wincon.) beadslut and i walked down to in-n-out burger for lunch, which was messy and yummy and the fries really don't travel well. (we brought it back to the hotel.) we also got to watch friday's episode of haven, which we'd missed on account of the hotel didn't get syfy, courtesy of, uh, crap, i don't remember how to spell her name. but the girl who did the haven vid. and it wasn't a bad episode altho i did want to smack nathan once or twice. i think that's going to be a theme of the season.
and then there was winprom! i packed the tiny velvet pirate hat in my carry-on so it made it to vegas intact. my black-and-white striped tights did not, however, fit me. they were too short in the crotch! and i do not have long legs! one size fits all my fat ass. hmph. beadslut helpfully had a pair that i could borrow, altho they were also kind of too short in the crotch and i had to take them off after a couple hours. but until then i looked good! and kind of piratey! and got some compliments on the tights and the tiny pirate hat and the frilly shirt! (which was also beadslut's. she kind of dressed me.) there were some pretty fabulous outfits and shoes at the prom, i have to say. i spent some quality time telling people they looked good.
nickelmountain came as cecil from welcome to night vale, and she looked AMAZING. and i totally recognized her thanks to tumblr. (during the weekend i had a conversation, or possibly more than one, about how i don't watch teen wolf and don't really want to, but because of tumblr i can recognize the two main actors as such.) i didn't take a lot of pictures and i think the only one of me on my camera doesn't show off my shoes - i think it's me and
vorpalblades who also looked AMAZING and you can't see her fabulous shoes either - but i had fun. there was a buffet and the raffle winners were announced early and i won a hannibal charm bracelet which was made by one of
girlguidejones' friends and chemm80 won my book. yay! (i kept trying to show it off to people on friday, so they could put down raffle tickets for it.) and! we raised $1600 or $1800 for kiva, go us. and then we went back to the room with colls to chat, and poor
halfshellvenus - roommate 3 - tried to sleep while we talked. and then we went to bed. eventually.
sunday i got roped into being a participant (rather than a panelist) in the authors and artists panel discussion, which was interesting from a "learning how artists feel about bigbangs, fandom, and fanart reblogging" standpoint. comment if you see art you like! let the artists know you appreciate their hard work! support artists who are new to your fandom! which is something i try to do anyway, but it's always good to be reminded. and after that
pixymisa asked if i wanted to see her art, and i said sure because we were just talking about it, and i was late to the marvel cinematic universe panel! which i was on! because evidently i can't read the schedule and thought the panel was at two when it was really at one! so i came running into the conference room twenty minutes late, just as they were finishing up the squee part of the panel. which was a bummer because i was really just there for the squee. i didn't have any movie-related rage and i don't have any speculation, which were the other two parts of the discussion. it was a nice lively discussion, tho, overall, and
scary-lullabies recced journey into mystery because i said i was all over the thor/loki brotherstuff (i don't ship them at all but man, i am so into the sibling relationship) but she neglected to tell me where to start. >.< and after that, appropriately, i went to the non-superhero comics panel, which was a lot of reccing and included me going on at length about dave sim. but also interesting to learn where people started with non-superhero comics, and what they gravitated to first - capes or something else.
there was a drawble table in the fandom lounge so you could ask your favorite artist(s) to draw you something, and i asked daunt if she would draw ichabod and abbie (because sleepy hollow is batshit but the main characters are ADORABLE), and i asked glock if she would draw beadslut as a hedgehog (which necessitated me asking beadslut to stand up so glock knew what she looked like >.< ), and then i never got a chance to ask either of them if they got around to it. yeesh, self. i think daunt was the one who recognized my poison elves guild t-shirt on sunday. i know someone did, anyway. i got to have a five-minute conversation about pe, which never happens and for that reason it was kind of lovely.
i did however get a chance to get some fangirl on
ordinaryink, who eventually asked me who i was - you know, after a few minutes you kind of want to know who you're talking to - and said she recognized my name. O.O which always weirds me out, altho it probably shouldn't because i tell people all the time when i recognize their names, even when i have no idea where i recognize them from. (comments in other people's ljs, usually.)
sunday night beadslut and i went back to the strip to find dinner - chemm80 and halfshellvenus went home that afternoon - got lost in the venetian, got kind of lost in harrah's, and ended up at some vietnamese/korean/japanese/chinese place, which i liked and she didn't. i told her about both my ideas for bigbang next year and she didn't tell me which one to write, altho she did give me good stuff to think about for idea #1. also i took some pictures of the strip at night. all the bright lights, you know. :D and that night we discovered that our room was next door to
chaneen,
saintawesome, and scary-lullabies. we were next door to fangirls ALL WEEKEND and didn't know! and we decided that if you went into the bathroom, turned off the light, and said "naked jared" at the mirror three times,
wendy would appear. beadslut tried it but, well, no wendy. no jared either.
and then monday i got up at the asscrack of dawn and spent the entire day getting home. >.< and might have come down with a minor case of con crud, which was mostly cured by a. going to bed at a reasonable hour, b. sleeping until my alarm clock went off this morning, and c. sudafed. and today i went to work and it was BUSY. welcome back, i guess.
the thing i love about wincon, aside from the chance to see a new city every year, is getting to talk to people about some of the most random things. not just fandom in general or fandoms in specific, or writing, or arting, or ao3/tumblr/twitter, or podficcing, or wincons past, but also living in small towns and geeking out with one's mom and kids and dogs and languages and how russians think hedgehogs are funny and whathaveyou. stuff. things. knitting. it's a good time. even if i don't sleep and can't read the panel schedule.
there were a lot of new folks this year, which was really exciting. also, a lot of them were just really cute. next year it's in orlando. you should all come. :D
if you read all that, or even if you didn't, have
a clip of tom hiddleston dancing. you're welcome.
