Yay! for the hope of getting a permanent job. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Somehow intolerance seems the topic today as I just read through a huge bunch of Tweets and also have a huge mail discussion about that with some friends. Seriously, I cannot understand where the problem is with couples of the same gender. If you are lucky with your partner, go ahead! Why not?

thank you! i really miss having paid vacations and holidays. and, you know, the certainty of a permanent position.

most of the really, er, violent anti-same-sex marriage sentiments seem to be religion-based - osc's a mormon, and the mormons paid a lot of money from out of state to block california's prop 8, which legalized same-sex marriage. (it passed, then it was retracted, then it was allowed to stand after all.) except there are also denominations that are totally cool with it. and man, there is so much hypocrisy - a lot of "i can discriminate all i want but if you call me on it you're being intolerant and censoring me/suppressing my free speech/etc etc". pfft. cry me a river, orson.

I got Ender's Game used, and enjoyed it. I figure he's not getting any money from my used book purchases, right? I really want to see the movie but I really don't want to throw money his way, so I'll just wait until it hits Netflix or somesuch.

i don't think people should necessarily be turned off of reading the book - or seeing the movie if they really want to - but just don't give him any money for it. so yeah, if you have to read the book, buy it used. from the preview the movie looked really cgi-heavy, but that doesn't mean it can't be good.

we got a preview for ender's game, and because i said "oh, i know what this is!" about thirty seconds in, my sister asked me if i'd ever read the book, and i said no, and then i had to tell her about orson scott card's card-carrying homophobia and anti-same-sex-marriage donations, and that there was now a backlash against the movie because of it, and she rolled her eyes at how he's calling for tolerance of his intolerance. if i didn't know anything about osc i might be interested in the movie.

I loved the books, especially the first one (the later books in the series kind of wandered off course a bit, IMO), and even bought the boxed set for my middle son because I knew he'd get it in the same way I did (and he did), but I won't spend a penny on the movie. I just won't. This guy is a grade-A jackass and fuck his attempts to backpedal because his idiot opinions are hurting his bottom line. I mean, who knew that the ranks of sci-fi fans were full of LGBTQ people? *snorts* Not OSC, obviously. Payback's a bitch, huh?

i've heard that ender's game the book is really good, but i'm not sure i could read it now knowing what i do about the author. (and i'd buy it used or borrow someone's copy if i was going to read it, because like hell am i going to shift any money in osc's direction.) i wish he had more self-awareness and any inkling of how immensely hypocritical and whiny he sounds - ignore my demonstrable homophobia and intolerance and general assholery so i can make money! - but that's clearly too much to hope for. i want it to be a teachable moment, as they say, but i highly doubt he's teachable. i have zero sympathy for him, and i hope the movie tanks so no one wants to film any of his other books.
