maurice sendak was once asked to illustrate the hobbit - it didn't work out, but there's a surviving drawing - tolkien asked for art samples - and man, it would've been so cool. he could've been the artist against whom later illustrators would be judged. (i still think alan lee would've been the gold standard for lotr, tho.)
