starmaker says it ain't so bad

dear boss,

getting the mail is not a hardship. really. even in the rain. i have an umbrella, my coat has a hood, and i'm wearing appropriate shoes. and most importantly, it's an excuse to get out of the office.

i mean, i'm going to go to starbucks anyway, you may as well give me a reason to keep walking.

cabin-fevery,

me

yesterday's pi party was unsurprisingly marked by a lot of pie. my (well, giogio's) spinach and mushroom pie went over well. someone brought a chicken potpie (YUM) and someone brought a cheesecake, which is not technically pie even tho it was made in a pie shell. but it was good. i ate my body weight in pie and then went to my parents' house - believe it or not - for dinner. which meant i watched them get stuff ready, told my mom about the pi party even tho she wasn't listening to me (which i realized ten minutes later when she asked what kinds of pie people brought, to which my answer was "i already told you but you weren't listening"), and then went to curling, where i did not entirely suck altho i wasn't fabulous either.

it's been raining since either friday night or saturday morning. i'm starting to wonder if i should be thinking about building an ark. at least my basement doesn't flood.

also my bigbang has just squeaked by the halfway mark for wordcount and i think i might finally be done with the intro, altho i have no idea how much more story i need to tell.

9. How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.
a lot of times i get ideas from other people's characters, actually. sam and aurelian exist because some cable channel kept repeating interview with the vampire one weekend, and i decided i could write better vampires than anne rice. (that might be my only example of author hubris ever.) ted and little jay were random minor characters in someone else's story. the ot4 are what happens when you read a lot of shoebox_project and go see whatever harry potter movie was out in 2004 with your sister, but you don't write fanfic. simon and jay exist because i was reading someone's d/s story on lj and suddenly there jay was, dragging simon behind him. the post-apocalypse exists because i like a good post-apocalypse and there was a lot of spn post-apocafic at the time, but i didn't want it to happen as a result of acts of god or man or nature. like, i didn't want to rewrite the day after or 28 days later or the day after tomorrow, i just wanted most of the world's population gone. keeley o'donnell was created because someone wanted to cowrite with me.

derry belmont might be the lone exception, because i have no idea where he came from, or why. i just had a random visual of this kid in his late teens standing in the middle of some woman's living room, feeling awkward about using her washer and dryer. she was old enough to be his mother but she wasn't his mother. and i poked at it a little bit, trying to figure out who he was and who she was and what he was doing in her house, and eventually a story sort of emerged. the only reason he looks like billy lush is because the black donnellys was on tv at the time and i thought billy was adorable.

10. What are some really weird situations your characters have been in? Everything from serious canon scenes to meme questions counts!
i did ultimately make sam a vampire, which counts as a weird situation for him, but if i ever wanted to give him and aurelian a happy ending that's probably the only way to do it, and it didn't seem that weird to me. a couple times i opened the floor to the flist for questions, and i think i did a q&a meme with sam and aurelian, but otherwise, i don't know, i can't really answer this question because i can't remember anything else specific.

11. Who is your favorite character to write? Least favorite?
right now? none of them, and all of them.

a note to pretty much anyone i've tried to have a conversation with the past couple days: IF YOU ACTUALLY LISTEN TO THE WORDS COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH, YOU'LL FIND I'VE ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION(S) AND DONE WHAT YOU ASKED ME TO. I'M NOT GOING TO REPEAT MYSELF TEN TIMES BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO PAY ATTENTION. TAKE NOTES IF YOU HAVE TO.

bigbang, work, thirty days of writing meme, weather, weekend wrapup, argh people
