every one i learn something new

i made ephemera a book for her birthday and now that it has actually reached her i can share some pics, because it's no longer a surprise. (yes i know her birthday was in april, shut up.)

i bound the story stay tape, by alex draven, which seems to be out of print which can't be right. weird. it's about a guy who makes corsets. he gets talked into modeling for the store catalogue by his boss and his boyfriend, and one of the things he wears for the photoshoot is a black-on-black brocade corset. do you know how hard it is to find black-on-black brocade patterned paper? very. i even went to joann fabrics to look for actual brocade and struck out there too. i can't remember where i finally found the paper. the ribbon came from a place called windsor button in downtown boston, which is my new favorite place to go for ribbon. i had to look up the lacing pattern online, as i have no idea how to properly lace a corset. and all that is a very long-winded way of explaining why the front is laced like it is.

for once i already owned an appropriate inside cover paper. the story's not very long - it worked out to 84 pages bound. the book's only 4.25" x 5.5". pocket sized!

this is supposed to be a picture of the binding and not a side view of the front cover, but sometimes my camera makes up its own mind as to what should be in focus. so you get an interesting view of the front instead of an in-focus view of what is one of the straightest and most even coptic bindings i've ever sewn. i'm an inconsistent sewer - i have to document the good bindings when i make them. even if they're out of focus. >.<

and now that's done, i can make the book i offered for sweet charity! which is only a month and a half late.... (i thought my deadline was the end of july, but no. end of june. at least i have all the paper and everything. i just have to make it.)
