Shinichi was flipping through the news channels when Kaito bounded into the room and plopped down beside him on the couch. “Ne, Shin-chan, I wanna ask you something.”
With a resigned sigh (Ever since Kaito heard his mom call him ‘Shin-chan’, he’d been calling him the same), Shinichi switched the television off and faced the magician with an annoyed “What?”
“I need your hand,” Kaito informed cheerfully as he held out his own hand. He wiggled said hand’s fingers when Shinichi did nothing but stare dubiously at him. “Your hand, Shin-chan, your hand.”
There was still no response from the detective other than a deadpan stare aimed at him, so Kaito rolled his eyes, took one of Shinichi’s hands and scooted closer. He waved the hand not holding Shinichi’s and, with a flourish, ‘conjured’ a pen from his many pockets.
On the detective’s hand, he drew two lines (which, he explained, were to represent a river) and a dot (which, he said, was to represent a rabbit). “If that’s the river, and that’s a rabbit, then how does the rabbit cross the river?” Kaito asked.
Finally, Shinichi spoke, still deadpan, “You erase the rabbit and draw it again at the other end.”
A grin spread on Kaito’s face as he said cheerfully, “Nope! In truth, I don’t really know the answer. I just wanted to hold your hand.”
To the magician’s delight, Shinichi’s cheeks reddened as he snatched his hand out of the other’s grip. “Idiot,” came the exasperated mutter, but Kaito could hear the undertones of flattery and fondness.
Ignoring the indignant squawk that escaped Shinichi as he suddenly hugged him, he cooed, “But I’m your idiot, right?”
Kaito gleefully watched as the detective turned a darker shade of red.
