Chapter Twenty-Three
He was losing all control….a whirlwind of emotions with each turn…..all he could here was his own heavy panting, the squeek of his shoes on the shiny floor. Every beat was the thumping of his heart….his body was one with the ryhtym of the music from the boom box.
Did he not understand himself that much?
He had not lost this new friend that he had grown used to having in his life so quickly. She was just moving away.
Why did he feel like he had lost a chance for something important.
Something he didn’t quite understand…..yet.
There was never a need, for u to walk out that door,
Please don’t leave me alone….alone on this empty floor…
Launching into another series of turns he yelped as he felt a sharp pain in his ankle and fell backwards. Expecting to feel the hard floor he was surprised as he felt himself be supported by a pair of strong arms. He opened his arms to see a concerned Yamada helping him onto his feet.
“Slow down buddy,” he said with a smile. Chinen nodded, and tested his ankle.
“It’s fine,”
“Yokatta ne,” Daiki said approaching him. Yuto was tinkering with the boom box. Ryutaro slapped his hand away and pushed him towards the other three. Chinen stared at his friends in surprise, when did they get here?
“Ready?” Ryutaro called.
Daiki showed him a thumbs up. Chinen was still staring at them in confusion.
“Let’s practice together ne?” Yuto said cheerfully. Chinen nodded.
Please don’t leave me alone….alone on this empty floor…
Ryutaro smiled as the music began. Chinen led the quartet as they danced in perfect sync, together.
Chinen couldn’t help but smile too.
Please don’t leave me alone….ever…

“Chi!”
Chinen looked up from the magazine he was reading with Ryutaro as Yuto approached him, completely out of breath.
“What’s up?” Chinen asked casually.
“Kaoru-chan, she’s leaving today, her bus is outside the café,”
Chinen stared at him.
“How’d you….no I mean so what?” he gulped focusing on the page. Ryutaro had stopped turning the pages and was staring at him.
“Baka, go see her off,” Yuto exclaimed pulling him up and pushing him towards the door. That little push broke Chinen’s hesitancy and he found himself running, as if for his life, not realizing the entire Jump was right at his heels.
He came to a halt right outside the café, remembering he had forgotten to bundle up before leaving in his rush. His breath came in misty white smoke as he held onto a pole to support himself. Kaoru’s brother was placing her bag in the bus and spotted Chinen. He gave him a wave before calling Kaoru who was hugging her dad. She spotted him after her brother pointed him out and dashed over to meet him.
“Are you an idiot? You’ll die of the cold,” she scorned taking off one of her gloves and forcing it onto his hand.
“Yo, these are girl gloves,” he exclaimed.
“Shouldn’t be that much of a problem, should it?” she replied rather cheekily.
He scowled before laughing.
“You’d never change,”
She shook her head.
“You got that right,”
“Kaoru, its time!” Kenichi called. She nodded.
“Well, Ja ne,” she said with a smile.
“Un, Ja,” he replied and she ran off towards the bus.
Chinen felt his eye grow heavy as moisture accumulated. He rubbed his eyes then held himself. He didn’t realize how cold it was. He felt somebody put his own jacket around him. He looked to see Daiki standing next to him. The older put an arm around him and waved to Kenichi. Yamada pulled his scarf off and almost chocked him with it. Chinen dug his exposed palm into his pocket and realized Kaoru’s gift was in it. He pulled it out.
“I can’t believe I missed all of this,” Takaki complained pouting. Yabu nodded.
“What’s that?” Yuto asked Chinen who was unwrapping the present. The bus had started moving.
He tore of the wrapper and gaped.
“101 ways to grow taller, naturally.” Yabu read over his shoulder. Daiki snatched the book from Chinen.
“Machi?” he exclaimed. Chinen glared as the bus moved away.
“I can’t believe this, that girl-,” Chinen began furiously. Even after all that she would leave behind an insult.
“Um….Chi?”
“What?”
Daiki showed him the first page. Beneath the name of the author was something scribbled by hand.
mukoda_kaoru93@gmail.com
Daiki started laughing. Takaki wolf-whistled. Yamada gaped.
“Hold it, how come a girl never gave me her e-mail, huh?” he whined shaking a distressed Keito.
Chinen smiled as he watched the bus disappear down the lane.
We are joined by a strong connection; a tiny ray of hope starts to shine,
Answer of a question, please tell me this time you’ll be mine.
