Chapter Twenty-Two
“It’s snowing,” Chinen sighed as he stared out of the window of the dance studio.
“Is it now?” his mother asked softly brushing his hair and leaning forwards to look out as well.
“Let’s go home?” she asked kindly. He shook his head.
“You go ahead, I want to practice some more,”
“Sweetie, you need to take it steady,”
“Don’t worry mom, it’s already been two weeks since the whole kidnapping ordeal, I’m more than fine,”
His mother sighed.
“Fine, I’ll send your dad to come pick you in an hour, ok?”
He nodded with a smile. She bent down a bit and kissed his forehead.
“You’ve grown a bit,”
He stared back at her as she smiled back before grabbing her jacket and leaving the room. Chinen continued looking outside. His ears picked up his mother’s voice and another. He stretched and turned around as he heard a soft knock on his door.
“Yes?” he called out leaning against the wall. He felt himself tense up as he saw Kaoru enter the room.
“Hey,” she said with a soft smile.
“Yo,” he replied smiling back.
“You still practicing for that solo?” she asked curiously.
“Yeah, how’d ya know?”
“You’re mom,” she replied.
Chinen raised an eyebrow. His mom was outside, peeking in. He could see her through the little crack. He cleared his throat loudly. The door shut with a snap.
Kaoru looked back surprised.
“So, you want to help me practice?” he asked casually striding over to the boom box.
“Hmm, um, no I don’t think I should dance right now Chinen-kun,”
“Somebody’s got cold feet,” he murmured as he bent down to insert the demo CD but loud enough to let it echo in the room. Kaoru raised an eyebrow.
“You really enjoy tweaking the wrong buttons don’t you?” she replied with narrowed eyes removing her thick jacket and gloves revealing the black trousers and shirt she wore underneath.
Chinen made a peace sign as the music started and took his place in the middle of the room. Kaoru rolled her eyes and walked towards and stood on the other side with her back to his.

“Chi?”
“His mom said he’s here,”
Yamada looked around the empty corridor curiously as Daiki tried calling his younger friend for the fifth time.
“He’s not picking up,” he replied after another unsuccessful try.
“Ryosuke?”
Daiki stared in confusion as he saw Yamada standing in front of a door which was slightly ajar, peering inside with an expression of pure shock. He then broke into a smile before beckoning Daiki over.
“Chinen has a dance partner,”
Both boys watched in mild wonderment at the pair within the room. They had good synch in both rhythm and style as they performed the dance in opposing directions, a contrast that blended perfectly.
They seemed like mirror images as they performed all the steps Chinen had been practicing without a flaw, standing back to back.
“Wow, they even have the same height,” Daiki commented as Ryosuke nodded in agreement and they continued to watch.
Hush my friend and let the pretty music speak,
Drowning in its rhythm, falling down, flowing deep,

Chinen smiled as Kaoru laughed hysterically. Both were tired and worn out, but he had to admit, it was fun.
“Ne, how are things back at the shop?”
“Oh, everything is fine now, dad’s back on his feet, Kenichi’s recovered too, business is as smooth as always,” she replied reaching for her bag and pulled out a small box wrapped in blue paper and deep red ribbon. She handed it to him.
“What’s this for? It’s not Christmas or anything yet,”
“It’s a thank you gift,” she replied and bowed.
“For everything you had to go through because of me, hontoni gomenasai!”
Chinen first stared at the box, then at her. He had a strange feeling growing from the pit of his stomach all the way up to his chest, a strange heaviness pulling him down.
“Mukoda,” he began. She looked up immediately.
“And, well it’s also a goodbye present,” she said with a small smile, her hands clasped behind her back, the most girlish pose he had ever seen her make.
“Huh?”
“My dad’s sending me to live with my aunt in Osaka, I’ll finish high school and enroll in a college there,”
“W-why?”
“He thinks I’ve made as many enemies as I have friends here,” she said with a small chuckle.
“I’ve picked a few fights before this too you know,” she continued putting on her jacket.
He watched her put on her gloves, scarf and hat before shouldering her bag. She then turned to him and extended her arm.
“I’m glad you took shelter in our restaurant,” she said with a laugh. “Drop by whenever you’re in Osaka.”
He stared at her hand. He didn’t want to shake it. Not yet. Her face was so cheerful, it made his heart clench.
He closed his fingers over her gloved ones and nodded with a small smile. They stood like that for a while until the sound of the door closing again was heard.
“Maybe it’s the wind,” she said her voice cracking. His eyes widened. She turned away quickly and with a rushed goodbye left the room.
He stared at the door for a while before placing the gift on the table and moving back towards the music player. He pressed play.
