Chapter 5 - Ruka

As the trio are led through a series of creaking doors and dimly lit stairs, Kei could very well feel how closely his companions were trailing him. He could almost feel their anxiety.

‘How strange,’ he thinks to himself as he realizes that they were discreetly avoiding corridors and the wards. He could feel his legs becoming heavy as they ascended the fourth flight of stairs.

“How did this happen actually?” he pants, his tired feet getting the better of him.

“I can’t say much for now sir, not my place it ain’t, but the entire building’s been in an uproar…the rest of the staff is terrified. We’ve dealt with many patients before sir and the poor dears just need some care and attention and they respond so well…but not this one…there’s something awfully wrong about this one…,”

“Are you telling me…this patient…?”

“He looks like an angel I tell you…when they first brought him in sir, I swear I thought that they had the wrong boy. He looked so innocent, so…beautiful…but it is as they say I suppose…roses have thorns. It is as if he houses a demon in that body…ah, here we are,”

Kei stops to catch his breath, jumping slightly as he feels cold, sweaty fingers wrap around his wrist.

“Daisuke?”

He turns his head and sees the two boys standing rather stiffly, arms interlinked. Daisuke seems pale but Ken had on a weak smile. He squeezes the smaller hand and gives both a reassuring look.

The nurse leads them out of the staircase and into a deserted hallway. It was dead silent and their steps upon the floor seemed almost noisy.

“Dr Ferguson’s in Dr Radcliffe’s office, it’s the last room on the right. Please go straight to it and do not, I repeat do not try any other doors, I’m needed in the kitchen,”

“Thank you maam,” Kei says with a bow as she walks away.

“I’m…not so comfortable,”

“I’m sorry Dai-chan…I shouldn’t have brought you here…Ken are you alright?”

“Hey…it’s not that I’m scared or anything, I just said that I’m uncomfortable!” Daisuke roars in his defense.

“Shh,”

Kei leaves Ken to calm the programmer as he knocks on the office door. He hears a muffled ‘come in’ and pushes the door open to find Dr Ferguson on a couch, reading through a document.

“Kei,”

The man looks relieved as the trio walk in and by the disheveled state of the office and the exhaustion on his mentor’s face, he could tell that it had been a rough night.

“Somebody died?” he asks as Dr Ferguson takes a gulp of his coffee.

“He was a young nurse, around your age Kei and from what I’ve heard he was the only one who had managed a proper response from the
patient. He sneaked in yesterday to give the patient a gift or something and when he didn’t appear for a couple of hours, the others traced him to the room the patient had been kept in. They found him in a pool of his own blood, his throat slit. The patient was curled up in a corner, his binds undone,”

“That’s…horrible,”

Dr Ferguson releases a heavy sigh.

“It took three men to bring that lad under control and placed under sedation. I arrived early yesterday but I couldn’t contact you then because of the happenings here. It seems that John’s disappearance was pretty much under mysterious circumstances. The staff here though believes that young Ruka was getting too much for him,”

“Ruka?”

Dr Ferguson hands him a file and Kei gasps as he flips it open and eyes the picture of a young man with a boyish face, dark brown watery eyes and striking features. Daisuke and Ken peek from his shoulders.

“Ruka…Yamashita?” Kei reads the name aloud.

“Yeah, there’s not much in this file except for his name, age at the time of admission, nationality, occupation and the case he was involved in…even that information is pretty vague. There’s no family background, no concise report of the medications he was given in the past, and no treatment plan.”

“What does that mean?”

“Either John had it all in his head, or he took the missing information with him…I can’t tell,”

“So…what now?”

“The boy is still under slight sedation…If you could talk to him, maybe we can have a slight idea of his mental state…again, John was the only one here who could speak his language and our work goes beyond physical behavior, we need to assess him thoroughly…you may refuse if you think this is too much,”

Kei buries the fear gnawing at his insides and shakes his head immediately, his jaw line firm as he flips the file shut.

“I will talk to him,”

*“Kei-chan…sore wa… daijobu dess ka?”

Kei smiles as he rounds upon his shorter companion, giving his shoulder a gentle squeeze.

**“Hai, hai…shinpai shinaide,”

“You’re companions may stay here if they are uncomfortable,” Dr Ferguson voices out, sensing the discomfort in the atmosphere.

“No that’s alright, we’ll go as his back up,” Daisuke interjects immediately and Ken nods silently in agreement.

“Fine, then let’s go.”

Kei takes a deep breath and holds in a cough, his eyes watering in the attempt. The smell of closed rooms and medicines lingered in the air and it makes him wonder exactly how many of these rooms were still being used. He silently watches two men in white uniforms and guns hanging from their belts unlock the bars and pull them aside to reveal a large metal door with a wheel in the middle. They then enter in a code on the console in the center of the wheel and step back to watch it turn an entire 360 before the sound of sliding metal is heard. They then push the heavy door open to reveal the confinement chamber.

The men make way for Kei as he walks in a couple of steps before coming to a stop in front of a part-cement part-glass wall. Placing his hands upon the cool, transparent surface, he gazes at the windowless room beyond it. The wall and the floor were made of a soft white material.

His eyes then spot a lump against the wall in the center of the room.

“Is that…Ruka?”

He hears a soft hum of acknowledgement from his mentor as he eyes the lithe body curled up on the floor, arms around himself and face hidden behind a messy but shiny curtain of black hair. Cords tied his wrists and ankles together.

“Open the door please,”

“Senpai…Kei …are you really sure about this? It’s your first time with a case like this isn’t it?” Ken speaks up this time, a hint of worry in his voice.

“That’s all…no other restraints?” Daisuke exclaims, outraged.

“We have implanted a device that will give him a mild electric shock if he tries to do anything dangerous, I have the remote,”

“What?” Kei gasps staring at his mentor in disbelief.

“This is how they’ve been keeping him under control apparently,” he replies to his student’s questioning gaze.

“We have tranquilizers on the ready if things get really out of control, I brought these two with me from London, they’re trained professionals,” he adds and at this the two men each cock their guns.

Ken sees Kei make a face but recover quickly as they opened a side door to let him enter Ruka’s room.

He could feel his heart throbbing but reassured himself. There was nothing in the room that the boy could use to hurt him…but wait…how did the nurse get killed then?

He jumps slightly as he feels Ruka’s hands twitch.

“Yamashita…Ruka-san desu ne?”
(You’re Ruka Yamashita, am I right?)

He gulps as the boy becomes very still all of a sudden. Was he holding his breath?

“Boku wa…Kurosaki Kei desu,”
(I am Kei Kurosaki)

Still, there was no response.

“How are you feeling? Does it hurt anywhere?”

“It’s none of your business,”

Kei’s eyes widen. He had heard it…it was muffled but he knew he couldn’t be wrong. Ruka had spoken.

“I am a doctor and I am here to help you,”

Kei feels his insides squirm as Ruka clutches himself tighter, burying his face deeper against his legs.

“Please believe me, Ruka-kun,”

He backs off slightly as Ruka starts sobbing.

“Please don’t say things like that…kind words…they’re all fake!” he wails out.

“It’s so scary, you’re so scary!”

Kei frowns. Scary?

“Ruka-kun?”

“Please leave me alone…he will kill you if you don’t!”

Kei holds up a hand as he hears the door open and stares back into those teary orbs only to realize how unfocused they actually seemed. The boy was at first frightened to the point of tears and now all of a sudden he was hostile.

‘A sudden shift in mood and behavior pattern,’ he notes inwardly.

“It’s alright Ruka-kun, who’s going to kill me?” Kei asks, his voice soft and stable.

The boy hits his head repeatedly as if fighting off a bad headache before fisting a tuft of his own hair. He then begins to hum and his music articulates into words that Kei has to squat down and strain his ears to hear.

“Behind the wall is a secret garden, that’s where all my treasures lie…,”

Kei raises an eyebrow at the lines that the boy keeps repeating, his voice trailing off at every ‘lie’ as if he couldn’t remember the continuation.

“Who’s going to kill me?” Kei asks again, a lot firmer this time. He waits patiently as Ruka’s song changes to a soft humming again before he repeats the question.

“Yes…Ruka,” the younger boy states with a proud smile as if he had remembered something important.

“What?” Kei asks confused.

“Ruka…Ruka’s going to kill you,”

Kei sighs heavily as he gets to his feet. He turns his back onto the younger and gives the anxious observers a tired nod, signaling the end of the session. He sees Daisuke’s eyes widen and in a flash one of the gunned men had barged into the room and fired.

He turns swiftly to see the boy crumbling onto the floor, body limp with a tiny dart embedded into his upper arm.

“What was that?” he almost shrieks.

“He was about to lunge at you sir,” the man defends. Kei glares at him and turns to observe the unconscious boy.

“Why do I have a feeling that it wasn’t really an attack,” he sighs heavily as he is led out the chamber.

A tear trails down Ruka’s cheek as the door slams shut.

Don’t leave me…please…

A/N: There was originally a japanese conversation between Ruka and Kei but for ease, I just used a different colour for long dialogues in japanese to separate it from the instances when the characters are conversing in English, for this chapter at least. What do you guys thing Ruka was trying to do? And I wanna know what you think is/are the important hint/s in this chappie :)
Mayumi_san and sugarwhales....love the way you guys are picking up the hints :)

*Kei-chan…sore wa… daijobu dess ka - Kei...is  it alright?
**Hai, hai…shinpai shinaide - yes, yes don't worry.
