Chapter Four - Hidden and Unhidden Facts

He struggles against the weight, the heaviness knocking the air out of him. It was getting harder and harder to breath with each passing second but still he fought…he had to.

‘You’re a pain! Following me everywhere and anywhere I go. It’s so annoying…I have my own life okay?’

He closes his ears…that voice…he hated that voice…

‘Everything would have been perfect if you didn’t exist, I hope you just drop dead someday so I can finally have my peace!’

He flinches as he feels the stinging bite of a belt, his screams muffled in whatever was suffocating him.

‘You’re going to tell on me? Ha! What a joke! You little brat…you’re father doesn't give a damn about you anymore you hear me? That’s why he dumped you here with me!’

He sees a body tumbling down the stairs and a heart-shattering scream.

He rubs his eyes groggily, an echo of the scream resounding in his ears before fading completely. It still felt so real.
Throwing off his blankets, he shivers as the air chills his sweat-drenched body. Looking to his side he sees Ken and Kei still fast asleep. He reaches for his phone from under his pillow, frowning as he realized it was only just after dawn.

He wipes away a stray tear and stares at Kei for a while, the dim gray light peeking in from the gaps in the thick curtains made the older boy look paler than ever. He wanted to wake him up, his heart yearning for company but decided against it. They’d probably make fun of him for crying after a nightmare. He was 23 for God’s sake! He shouldn’t be this way.

Sighing deeply, he steps onto the carpeted floor before shuffling over to the bathroom. A hot shower would do him good.

“Eh…so there’s the little squirt,”

Kei strides into the dining hall with Ken trailing closely behind. After filling their plates with the breakfast buffet, each took a seat on the table Daisuke had already occupied. The programmer had his nose in a magazine, his dark brown eyes focused on the words as if he were translating a language with his gaze.

“What are you up to Dai-chan?”

“Hmm…reading,”

Kei rolls his eyes at the reply.

“I can see that,”

“Good to know,”

Kei crosses his arms and throws a glare across the table until his eye catches the contents of Daisuke’s glass

“Hey Dai-chan, is that chocolate milk?”

Daisuke glares back.

“Ya…so what if it is? Age has nothing to do with a man’s choice of beverage,”

Ken coughs into his tea in an attempt to hold back a laugh until Kei reaches out and pats him on the back.

“Calm down kid, I asked cause…I wanted some too,”

“You can’t have it, it’s mine,”

“What? You’re such a selfish brat!”

“Well you’re a scary wax figure devoid of human feelings!”

“Shortie!”

“Vampire!”

“Baka!”

“Ahou!”

“What are you reading Daisuke-kun?” Ken interferes, efficiently stopping the heated exchange of ‘pleasantries’ between the two.

“It’s an old tourism magazine; I picked up this issue cause it has an article on Westfordshire,”

“Oh, what does it say?” Ken asks interestedly as Kei reaches out to poke the yellow rose standing in a simple vase at the center of their table with a visible pout on his face.

“It’s written here that Westfordshire is famous for its wide variety of roses and its pleasant weather. The people are friendly and hospitable and they adore celebrating which explains the many festivals held at the village year long. It also states that the village’s origins date all the way back to the medieval era. Apparently a group of knights were exiled from their lord’s territory. During their perilous journey through the wilderness they arrived upon a serene glade. The wild roses that grew in abundance here gave them a sense of peace and serenity and so they decided to make the place their permanent home. And that’s how the village of Westfordshire came to be,”

“Pleasant weather huh?” Kei commented, staring at the view from the window, bathed in a dull gray. As if on cue, thunder rolled from above.

“Global warming?” Daisuke replies with a shrug. Kei sighs and begins nibbling on his toast.

“I wonder what the knights were exiled for?” Ken ponders aloud. Daisuke looks back into the magazine.

“For suspicion of being involved in some kind of dark arts associated with the ‘manipulation of the mind’,”

“Manipulation of the mind?” Kei asks surprised.

Daisuke shrugs for the umpteenth time.

“Yeah, they didn’t elaborate on that so beats me, but wait there’s more information here, a little paragraph at the end about the village’s contribution to society,”

“That is?”

“6 years ago…the Umbria home was established north of Westfordshire to house the mentally ill. It is a private institution funded by connecting hospitals in London and provided with a complete medical staff and trained professionals,”

“Oh, that’s interesting,” Ken speaks up as Kei scrutinizes the rare seriousness of Daisuke’s face.

“Yeah, but guess what happened after that?”

“What?” Kei asks with a hint of suspicion to his tone.

Daisuke flips the magazine close and crosses his arms.

“They started bringing in criminal cases…and none of those cases ever recovered…most died during treatment,”

Kei coughed into his juice and Ken did the patting this time.

“Over the years, the place began to lose funds as people began losing trust on the institution and that’s because most of the cases that kept being admitted were only held for isolation or quarantined, the violent ones were only restrained and locked up…and the funds that were not spent on their treatment were used for research. Most of the staff left and now they only have I think one psychiatrist registered with the facility…and in my opinion, that’s not enough for an institution that big,”

“Dr Radcliffe,” Ken mutters under his breath. And now even that man had disappeared.

Kei though was staring at the boy in disbelief. Daisuke smirked in return.

“I felt like we needed to be careful in every way, so I did my homework on the place…I had to hack a lot of personal blogs and databases so most of this is underground information…keep it to yourselves,”

“You…hacked?” Kei hissed furiously.

Daisuke smiled smugly.

“Well yah…and I went around interrogating all the nice people, the cook in The Umbrella’s kitchen used to work at the Home so…yah…she was a big help too,”

“I can’t believe this,”

“Would you let me continue you corpse?”

Kei glared at him as he took a large gulp of his milk and cleared his throat.

“So like things weren’t bad already but about two years ago, a patient escaped from the facility and caused havoc in the town…he apparently beat a gentleman to death with his own cane, the staff from the Home took him back though…I found this out from Madam Marian, the lady who greeted us yesterday…,”

“So that’s why Westfordshire’s own people have left this village…,” Kei gasps.

“Exactly how long have you been awake?” Ken asks as Kei continues gaping at his friend…very obviously disturbed at the information.

“A couple of hours…I told you…I need a scenario for my game so I’m going to do my research as well as possible,”

Kei jumps as his phone begins to ring.

“It’s the doctor!” he exclaims and answers the call.

“Hello?”

“Kei, I believe you’re at The Umbrella?”

“Yes sir,”

“Good, I’ve been at the Home since yesterday morning, there was a…a little bit of problem here but things are under control for now so please come as quickly as you can,”

“Yes sir.”

“What happened?” Ken asks as Kei flips his phone close. Something about his mentor’s voice felt odd. He looks up to meet his friend’s questioning gazes.

“Let’s go, he’s expecting us,”

“Wait Kei-chan, we’re not going to walk are we?”

“Wow, talk about lack of maintenance,” Daisuke speaks up unabashed as he begins recording the scenery. The brick walls were faded, vines of black roses clambering over them and the large gate of iron was rusting away. It opened up to a walkway flanked by overgrown lawns. The building itself needed serious paintwork but it was a massive structure, almost 5 storey’s high. The windows were tinted and two tall chimneys on the opposite extremes spewed thick black smoke into the air. The dark clouds were shifting occasionally letting through beams of sunlight, but they weren’t bright enough for the dullness of the silent vicinity. It was then that they realized…it really was exceptionally soundless.

“You were right about the funding…,”

“I’m always right Kei-chan,”

“Whatever…but black roses huh?”

“They’re probably painted,”

“Actually,” Ken interfered.

“I believe they’re genetically engineered,”

“Visiting someone?”

All three boys jump at the new voice and turn around swiftly to find a tall lean man in black. He had on a hat, and a gold pocket watch that matched the frame of his square spectacles.

“Um…we’re students,” replies Kei with slight uncertainty. Ken had on a polite smile while Daisuke just shrugged and resumed his recording.

“I see, well…have a good day then,”

“You too sir,”

They watched as the man walks down the road to town, whistling a tune to himself.

“I got a weird feeling from that guy,” Daisuke comments flatly, shutting off his camera. Kei looks at him surprised.

“Hey, look somebody’s coming!” Ken points out and soon enough, a nurse almost slams against the gate, unlocking the large padlock with trembling hands.

“I’m sorry there was nobody on guard at the gate young sirs, are you Dr Ferguson’s guests?”

“Yes we are,” Kei replies, very much aware of the flushing of her cheeks or the way her eyes bulge.

“Is everything alright?” he asks as she ushers them in and quickly locks the gate again.

“Well,” she begins uncertainly.

“A staff member died last night.”
