Arthur spoke first.
‘You’re back.’ Even the slightly longer dark hair couldn’t hide the gleam in those eyes. Arthur’s own happiness reflected in them.
‘I knew you wouldn’t let me down, Merlin.’ The weight of the crown that now sat firmly on the new king’s head seemed considerably less. Merlin’s smile was enough to ease the burden.
‘Every moment without you was torture.’ Merlin’s heart skipped a beat. The desperation in Arthur’s eyes showed that he meant every word.
‘Waiting for you was the hardest thing I have ever had to endure.’ Arthur knew that any battle or death seemed simple in comparison to not seeing the man he loved for so long.
‘I am glad you’re back.’ Merlin inhaled deeply, fighting the tears. King Arthur of Camelot stood before him looking so vulnerable, shaking.
Merlin’s hand slipped into the King’s and stroked his palm, a touch that meant everything.
‘I missed you.’ And words that said enough.
