FILL: Weather the Storm. And the snow and the hail and the wind and the sun. 3/5 anonymous May 30 2011, 00:24:26 UTC
Eduardo's taken to having dinner with Mark. Mark doesn't know how he gets in the house, much less how he knows exactly when Mark starts eating the Chinese takeout he picked up on his way home.

"You got orange chicken, my favorite." Eduardo tells him, hovering just behind Mark and letting him know exactly how much he'd like and no broccoli please, thanks so much. "Good thing you got dinner. Now I don't have to cook when I get home."

Mark glares at his own food. "Do you even have a home? Because as far as I know, you've somehow managed to inhabit mine." He takes a sullen bite and can't even enjoy how good it tastes. "Now that I know you're not actually homeless, I'm going to have to ask you to leave. Like now."

"Are you really in any position to make demands?" Eduardo asks, face full of bliss, because yeah, it's really good food. And also Mark's. "I thought I heard hail in the forecast for the morning. Nasty stuff to drive in, you know."

Mark chokes on his chicken, swallowing it down with a huge gulp of water. "Hail? Wardo, you are not going to make it hail tomorrow. Tell me you're kidding."

"I'm not going to do anything, Mark. I'm not some weather god or something." Eduardo says. "You just seem to have really bad luck with weather. Not my fault. Maybe you should ask Sean for some help. You know, once he gets out of rehab."

Mark makes a disgusted sort of noise. "You are acting like a child." He says, pushing back his plate. "Which is exactly why you're no longer the CFO of Facebook. So you only have yourself to blame for this shit. Not me."

Eduardo's eyes widen, and he abandons his cloud stalk over to Mark. "Blame myself?" He repeats, incredulous and angry. "It's my fault you only wanted my money and screwed me over? That's my fault?"

"Jesus Christ, Wardo, it wasn't about the money and you know it." Mark tells him. He wants to yell, he wants to scream, really, but he will not let Eduardo get the best of him again. "It was about you not really wanting to be a part of the company. You wanted to be in New York with Christy instead of in California with me."

Eduardo tugs at his hair, glaring at Mark. "Are you being serious right now? You think I didn't want to be here with you?"

"If you wanted to, you would have been." Marks states calmly, already wanting this conversation over. He has a headache from coding all day and a headache from dealing with Eduardo.

"Mark, you know it wasn't that easy. My father--"

"I don't give a shit about your father, Wardo, and neither should you." Mark growls. "This has nothing to do with him. You didn't care about Facebook and you didn't care about--" He cuts himself off, looking down at his feet and clenching his eyes shut.

"Mark." Eduardo whispers, coming a step closer. "You know I--"

"Don't say anything else." Mark mutters, still refusing to meet Eduardo's eyes. "It's done now anyway. I screwed you out of the company and you're suing me. So I really don't know why you're even here right now. You should go back to New York. Back to Christy." Mark pushes past Eduardo, stomping down up the stairs to his bedroom.

"Fine! Walk away!" Eduardo yells after him. "But I'm sleeping on the couch just to spite you. And expect hail tomorrow, asshole! I hope it knocks you right in the head!"

It does hail in the morning.

Mark scowls out his bedroom window, and Eduardo hovers so close behind him that he can probably feel Mark's every wince whenever the hail hits his car.

"I'm sure you'll get your wish." Mark starts dryly. "There's no way in hell I can walk through that and not get hit in the face."

Eduardo sighs and stares back out the window. "You deserve it." He says finally. "Now get dressed. You have a meeting in an hour."

"How do you know that?" Mark asks. "I only got the text from Chris this morning."

Eduardo levels him with a look Mark hasn't seen in months. Before Christy and Sean Parker and share dilutions. It's exasperated and fond and annoyed. Completely Eduardo in every way. "Really, Mark. Chris told me about it when I was at the offices. He knows I'd remember when you didn't."

Mark only glares, padding over to his closet and pulling out his customary t-shirt and shorts combination. He can feel the disapproval coming off Eduardo, heavy and chiding.

"Isn't this meeting important?" Eduardo asks him, gaze lingering on Mark's closet. His hands clench into fists, and Mark can tell he's trying so hard not to pick out clothes for Mark to wear. "Shouldn't you dress a little better?"

Mark shrugs carelessly, pulling off his t-shirt and boxers to get dressed. Eduardo is silent behind him, almost uncharacteristic at this point, because he's been talking nonstop at Mark for days now. Gloating about the weather. Bitter about the dilution. Threatening about the lawsuit. Mark almost doesn't know what to do with this silence.

Marl pulls on a hoodie to defend himself against the hail and finally Eduardo snaps. He makes a pained noise in the back of his throat and pushes Mark out of the way. He stands tall and firm in front of the closet, practically glaring at every piece of clothing Mark owns.

"Don't you have any button downs? Where's that light blue one?" He finally asks, shuffling through the hangers. "It's kind of faded looking? Nevermind, I found it." He throws it at Mark, along with a nicer pair of khaki shorts. "At least look like you tried, Mark, really."

Eduardo leaves the room right after, both of them ignoring the fact that this is the most comfortable they've been around each other since the creation of Facebook.

Mark gets dressed slowly, idly glancing out the window at the hail. It seems like it's slacked up a bit, hitting his car with a little less force.

He makes his way downstairs, pointedly ignoring the bagel Eduardo holds out to him. He takes the jacket though, mostly because it will shock the hell out of Chris, and Mark is all for that.

Outside, the hail is, well, very annoying. Almost as annoying as the fact that Eduardo seems to be following Mark. And getting into his car.

"What are you doing?" Mark asks him, refusing to get into his car with a vindictive weather god sitting in the front seat.

Eduardo shrugs, carefully avoiding Mark's sharp gaze. "Just want to make sure you get to work alright. If something happens to you in this hail, I won't be able to sue, you know."

"You could always make the hail stop." Mark points out.

The self-satisfied smile jumps back onto Eduardo's face. "I could do that, yes."

He doesn't though.

Mark does get hit in the face, though. Eduardo thinks it's hilarious. Mark? Not so much.

It's the weekend when Chris forces Mark to come to some charity dinner.

"It'll be good for the image we're trying to create." He says flatly. "People are going to think you don't care."

"They'd be right." Mark points out.

He still has to go.

He's running late when Eduardo floats over on his cloud. Mark's standing in front of the bathroom mirror, trying every method ever to control his hair.

"Why are you so dressed up?" Eduardo asks him, watching carefully as Mark gives up with a curse. "Big date or something?"

Mark snorts, washing his hands of gelled gunk and hoping no one notices only half his head has gel on it. "No. Some charity dinner Chris is forcing me to attend."

"Oh." Eduardo says quietly. "Are you going by yourself?"

Mark shakes his head, glaring at his reflection and trying to fix his tie. Eduardo sighs and descends from his cloud, slapping Mark's hands away as he ties it right.

"No." Mark answers, trying not to react to how close Eduardo is right now. He stills smells the same, expensive and smart. "I'm taking Sean."

Eduardo fingers jerk around the knot of the tie, almost choking Mark in the process. "Oh." He repeats. "Oh. Have fun then, I guess." He steps back stiffly, leaving the bathroom with quick, jerky steps that make Mark feel, for the first time, like this is his fault.

He leaves for the dinner, hurrying so he can meet Sean there before he gets too many drinks. Mark peers out the window the whole time, anxious for some bizarre change in the weather. It's all clear until he parks and gets out the car, starts to walk over to where he can see Sean standing by the entrance, flirting with a woman that at least looks to be 21, thankfully.

The wind picks up when he's not too far from his car. At first Mark thinks nothing of it, pushing through the heavy gust that stings his eyes and blows his hair around. But it starts to increase, almost pushing him back towards his car with every step he takes forward.

Mark sighs. "Wardo, I have to go to this. Stop with the hurricane gusts." Mark can't see Eduardo anywhere though, but that doesn't mean anything. "I don't know what you want from me!" He practically yells when it literally becomes impossible to take a step forward. He's drawn attention now, people stopping to watch him in his own personal tornado. Mark sees Sean look over at him quizzically, and Mark barely has time to call out a warning before another gust of wind knocks Sean on his ass.

"Do you want me to say I'm sorry?" Mark yells over the wind. "I'm sorry you didn't care about Facebook or me! I'm sorry you let your father control every aspect of your life. I'm sorry I wasn't good enough for you! Is that what you want to hear, Wardo? I'm sorry!"

The wind gets even worse, and out of the corner of his eye Mark can see his car start to sway from the force of it. "Not the car, Wardo." Mark pleads. It moves a few inches, the tires lifting off the ground slowly. "Not the car, please not the car." It lifts up a few more inches, looking seconds from blowing away. "You are such an asshole!" Mark exclaims angrily. "Fine. I'm sorry I didn't talk to you before I diluted your shares! I'm sorry I let Sean live in the house. I--" Mark pulls his jacket tighter, squinting against the leaves blowing around his face. "I'm sorry I hurt you."

The wind stops.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, ANON? Whhyyyy you do this to me? I'm reading this, cackling away at Wardo helping Mark dress and then for the dinner straightening his tie and now you go give me all these ~feelings when he apologises! STOP MAKING ME LOVE YOU MORE! We need to control this before it gets out of hand and I start vomiting perky-sounding rainbows.
Loved it! And Sean falling on his arse was FTW!

When Mark wakes up, it's to the smell of coffee. He almost doesn't want to face Eduardo right now, especially since he'd been strangely absent when Mark got home last night.

Mark decides to take a shower first, washing all the product out of his hair. He takes longer than usual, mostly because he has no desire to see what Eduardo decided to do with the weather today.

He only gets out when he's been in so long that the water actually becomes annoying, drying off with slow, languid motions and taking his time in putting on sweatpants and a hoodie.

He pads downstairs carefully, pointedly not looking out the window. Eduardo's standing in the kitchen. Actually standing. Not perched on his ridiculous cloud and looking down at Mark like he's one of Eduardo loyal subjects or something.

He holds out a mug, steam coming out the top. "Coffee? Black like you like it." He says to Mark, eyes barely leaving the newspaper he's reading.

Mark takes it carefully, eying Eduardo with no small bit of trepidation. "Thanks."

They sit in silence for awhile, Eduardo reading The Economist and Mark sipping his coffee. It's awkward, but for once Mark doesn't feel like Eduardo's glaring at him every time he turns his head.

Eduardo folds the paper up when he's finished, getting up to get himself another mug of coffee. "Did you mean it?" He asks quietly, back turned so Mark can't read his expression.

Mark sets his coffee down, staring hard at the tense way Eduardo's holding himself, braced for confrontation. "Yes." Is all Mark says.

"I'm still mad, you know." Eduardo replies, turning just slightly. "But maybe, like the biggest maybe ever, I'll think about not suing you."

Mark starts to talk, but Eduardo cuts him off. "Only if we actually sit down and talk about everything. Maybe--" He turns fully around, finally looking at Mark. "Maybe over lunch. Maybe."

There are so many things Mark wants to say, most of them probably wrong.

"Yes." He decides on.

When they leave out later, the promise of forgiveness and so much more curling the ends of Mark's mouth into just a hint of a smile, it's clear and sunny.
