okay so according to the list of baby names that exists online, eduarda really is the feminine form of eduardo and since i am a huge supporter of being as close as you can get when it comes to genderbent names, i let eduarda be her real name, however, like a lot of people, she has a nickname. /makes long author's notes that...no one really needs to read.
The genetics that Edi is blessed with dictated that no matter what, her metabolism would be faster than a speeding bullet or at the very least, faster than just about every woman she knows. While she was growing up, she welcomed it, after all, what teenage girl doesn't like being able to fit into the cute bikinis or the skinny jeans or the skirts and dresses without having to diet constantly. It's not to say she was built like a teenage boy, no, she had a figure, but she still was the thinnest girl she knew. It just happened that way.
(You're too thin, your lack of weight makes you look like a twig that could snap at any moment.
Pai, I've been trying! It don't want to be this thin.
If I didn't know that you eat like the guys who row crew daily, I'd think you're anorexic.
She was okay with Mark saying that. It means he notices the things she does and that her affection isn't as one-sided as one might think.)
That fast metabolism isn't exactly the best thing to have while pregnant though, since the whole point is to gain weight, not just the because of the actual tiny human being inside you, but because said tiny human needs food just like the rest of mankind. Edi makes sure she has something to eat at all times and makes sure that even during the deposition she can have food to nibble on. She tries not to notice how Mark keeps giving her this questioning look every so often, because that would mean that she slipped up again and that he was one step closer to finding out that she had a secret, specifically had a secret about being pregnant with their child.
They break for lunch one day after the incident she calls "Devil Flats" and like any other day since she found out she was pregnant and needed to gain weight, she started to eat a lunch that was only slightly larger than her ones back at Harvard.
Mark always has a knack for having the worse timing in the universe and chooses then to bring up what she feared he had noticed.
"You're eating more."
"And I'm tall and I don't wear heels any more and you're an asshole. Would you like to state any other obvious things?" Her tone is biting, because this isn't her idea of good conversation, let alone one to be having while starting to eat her lunch. She stabs a bit of lettuce and imagines that it's Mark's head. She thinks her hormones increase homicidal thoughts, (Maybe it's just Mark's presence that does.)
"You're lashing out at me for stating a small thing, Wardo-"
She cuts him off, pointing her fork at him. "It's Edi to you, Mark," Not many people know, but her real name is Eduarda, which she's known since she was little is just one letter (and one that can easily be mistaken for the other letter) away from Eduardo. She knows her father did it on purpose.
(They thought I was a boy, Pai.
Be careful how you write that a of yours, then. She wasn't the one who wrote her name down.
That name is cheating.
It really is when she thinks about it, but Mark's face when he says that after she tells him makes it worth not telling him she already thought it was cheating.)
Everyone calls her Edi when they meet her. She let him call her Wardo because it made her smile and allowed her to make a joke about him always being able to find her. He stares at her for a moment before speaking again.
"Edi. You're lashing out at me for pointing out that you're eating more than you ever did at Harvard. It's interesting."
She rolls her eyes, trying to avoid having her mind worry about all the wrong conclusions he could be getting from this. "It's called me finally figuring out a way to gain some weight on my body. Looking like this gets tiring after a while, but since you're so concerned, maybe I should just throw all of this away. Oh, wait, no, I don't think I will, because it's not of your business, Mark. If I want to eat this much, I will."
