O cross! O spite! O hell!

The Course Never Did Run Smooth

Xaldin received the assignment of mentally torturing the Beast, turning his heart to darkness, and recruiting the resulting Nobody on a very clear night. In a strange turn of events, five of the original six members ended up enjoying drinks on the Whirlwind Lancer’s giant balcony, at his invitation. Organization Members Four through Six read through the manila file folder debriefing Xaldin on the mission.

“‘If he can learn to love another and earn her love in return by the time the last petal falls, then the spell will be broken,’” Zexion read aloud. Xaldin was pacing by the railing.

“Love,” Vexen snorted. Lexaeus slid him his shot glass. Xigbar toasted him across the table and they knocked back the liquid at the same time. (Vexen was winning.) “What a ridiculous emotion.”

“Is love an emotion?” Xaldin’s strong voice came back to them. He was leaning on the balcony’s railing now, looking up at the pinpricked sky.

“How do you mean, Xaldin?” Xigbar dared to ask.

“Is love an emotion, or is it an unstoppable force, unaffected by the sands of time? Of course it’s illogical, and yet we are all slaves to it.

“Love destroys you from the inside out. It cracks back your rib cage and leaves you vulnerable; it opens every part of you. You are left with all your vulnerable points without defence; all your battlements go down.

“It confuses you until you don’t know who you are anymore; until you question everything you thought you knew about anything. Someone could reach up inside you and do something terrifying like change you.

“Love sets your soul on fire, but disillusions you to the point that you don’t realize you’re burning.” Xaldin raised his hands to the sky and the other four followed his gaze. “You smolder in the flames of your own passion, and pray to the heavens that it never just stops. That whoever it is doesn’t leave you to die. You have to trust someone else not to rip you apart when they can. So easily.

“And the worst part about love is that the damage it does is impossible to fix independently. We have to find help, and that is seldom easy.

“As those without hearts, we should realize now more than ever that love makes no sense. We should reject it. And yet, there are times when there is nothing more intriguing than the sound of silence and another’s heartbeat, doing nothing but… beating.

“I am so tired of tearing out hammering heartbeats.”

For a second, an uneven number of eyes reflected the sky and they are lost in a comrade’s words. And then Xigbar reclined in his chair and announced, “He’s drunk.”

“Oh, definitely,” came the collective reply.
