Foreshadowing Done Right

misdirection strikes again. and by misdirection i mean ... i mean that whole angel vessel part. Dean may have been meant to be the vessel for Michael when he was born. but Stuff Happened.

let's look at S3, shall we?

as far back as "Malleus Maleficarum" (3x09) we have this convo between Ruby and Dean (thanks jeymien!)
DEAN Wacky night. So let me get this straight, you were human once, you died, you went to hell, you became a...
RUBY Yeah.

RUBY turns to leave.

DEAN How long ago?
RUBY Back when the plague was big.
DEAN So all of 'em - every damn demon - they were all human once?
RUBY Every one I've ever met.
DEAN Well, they sure don't act like it.
RUBY Most of them have forgotten what it means, or even that they were. That's what happens when you go to Hell, Dean. That's what Hell is - forgetting what you are.
DEAN Philosophy lesson from a demon. I'll pass, thanks.
RUBY It's not philosophy. It's not a metaphor. There's a real fire in the pit. Agonies you can't even imagine.
DEAN No, I saw "Hellraiser". I get the gist.

RUBY turns and starts walking away.

RUBY Actually they got that pretty close. Except for all the custom leather.

DEAN looks thoughtful and RUBY stops her departure, and turns back to DEAN.

RUBY The answer is yes, by the way.
DEAN I'm sorry?
RUBY Yes, the same thing will happen to you. It might take centuries, but sooner or later Hell will burn away your humanity. Every Hell-bound soul, every one, turns into something else. Turns you into us. So yeah. Yeah, you can count on it.
DEAN There's no way of saving me from the Pit is there?
RUBY (sighs) No.
and as we know, Dean did go to Hell... and as we learn in S4, he made the choice to start torturing souls so he could survive.

and, while we're in S3, how about this gem from the next episode, "Dream a Little Dream of Me" (3x10) (thanks to raloria for this transcript): in the Dreamscape, Dean meets himself, who goads Dean into reevaluating how everything was actually his father's - music, car, mission - and Dean retorts how he doesn't deserve to go to Hell, and then shoots his dream-self. at then end of the episode as Dean and Sam are driving away, he recalls what he saw in the Dreamscape after firing that shot:Dream: [After Dean has shot him, DreamDean’s eyes open to show they’re black] You can’t escape me, Dean. You’re gonna die. And this, this is what you’re gonna become.

(cap by oxoniensis)

open your eyes, Dean.
