[See a young Naoto (about nine years old) wearing her father's cabbie hat, now much too big for her head. Her hair is cropped short in a shaggy, boyish cut. She's dressed in a white nightie and kneeling in front of a large plasma screen TV. There appears to be a news report.]
[The news caster, young man, very professional:] I'm here at the scene of the accident which claimed the lives of two victims. The nationally acclaimed detective team of Nobuyuki and Mayu Shirogane were involved in a high-speed chase only hours before. [In the upper right hand corner of the screen, two people, presumably Naoto's parents.] A large semi entering the highway barreled into the Shiroganes' car as it was approaching the crossroads, pushing it off the road and pinning it against a very large tree. Medical examiners claim the crash was instantly fatal.
[The camera pans out to take in the scene of destruction: twisted metal and broken glass. Blood everywhere. Twin gouges of churned earth where the vehicle skidded through the dirt. The front of the semi had completely crushed the passenger side of the car while the driver's side is pinned against the trunk of the tree.]
[Naoto presses both hands against the screen; the image wavers a bit under the pressure of her hands.]
Mommy...? Daddy...? [Tears begin to well in her eyes as she stands, her hands reaching for the small portraits of her parents' faces on the screen.] Mommy! Daddy! Don't go! Please don't go!
[Grampa's voice, off-camera:] Naoko! Turn off the TV, right now!
No! [crying] I want Mommy and Daddy! I wanna go where they are! You have to take me there! [The TV screen goes dark as someone switches it off using the remote. Naoto whirls, cheeks red, eyes gushing out tears.] No! Turn it back on, Grampa!
[The old man moves into frame and scoops the sobbing child into his arms and carries her away while she continues to scream and wail.]
