The Hunger Games: Theories for Book 3 (Mockingjay)

Feb 17, 2010 08:04

Hey guys!!  I've been busy reading, and I just finished the first two books in The Hunger Games Series.  Mockingjay, book 3, comes out on 24 August this year and upon finishing it, I have tons of theories I'd like to share with those who have read both books, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire.  This post is chock-a-lock full of spoilers, so please don't read it unless you've read both books.

#1:  Mr. Everdeen & Mr. Hawthorne died in the same "blast" in the mines.  They never found any of Katniss' father's remains, right?  My belief is that Everdeen & Hawthorne were revolutionaries.  Katniss mentions that once District 12 was in a region called Appalachia.  That's PA/WV/NC country.  I know for a fact that lots of mining goes on in PA and WV.  Katniss also says that since mining once went on there, THAT'S WHY THEY HAVE TO DIG SO DEEP.

Where is District 13?  Underground.  Who knows about being underground?  Everdeen & Hawthorne.  Where do you think that Gale learned all of his political dissent (the strongest form of patriotism!)??  Of course he learned it from his father.  If Katniss was 11 when Everdeen died, then Gale was 13, and guaranteed, he heard about how horrible the Capitol is from his dad.

Everdeen & Hawthorne were revolutionaries.  Are they still alive?  I think that is unlikely at this point, mainly because it complicates an already very intricate plot and would serve no purpose except that we would get to see Katniss experience betrayal and Gale would get even more fanatical than he is now.  Neither of these things serves the plot when Katniss already has things like the revolution/uprising and Peeta missing to deal with.

#2:  I don't believe that Peeta will feature very prominently in this book.  (I have an UNLESS here)  I think that Katniss is going to come to her senses and go berserk, refusing to help the Alliance until she has Peeta back.  She can't really live when there's a risk that he's in danger.  I'm not getting K/P on you all here (though that is my camp).  Katniss feels the same way about Gale -- she would be wild to rescue him from the Capitol as well.  I think that this book will be a lot about Katniss realizing that she loves Peeta (I think that's the way it's going to go, folks) and her crusade to find him, to 'keep' him, as she says.

I think that she's going to be driven towards the Capitol, though she'll have to spend time in D13 at first.  She'll have to go get Peeta, I think, because Snow is going to use him as bait and snare her in a trap.  She's going to walk right into it.  This will be about Katniss doing this on her own.

#3:  UNLESS Collins does what I am kind of hoping she does (for the sake of character development).  I hope she divides the book into three parts (like Breaking Dawn/Twilight) and we get to see what's going on from other characters' stream-of-consciousness points of view.  What Gale is doing.  What Katniss is doing, and yes, what Peeta is doing.  Collins has this bad habit of inserting "blah blah blah" when Katniss hears what Peeta thinks of her, how he loves her.  She states these things, but we never get to hear Peeta make these lovely speeches.  (read: the proposal)  If we get into Peeta's head, we'll see more than the 2-D that he seems to be at times and he'll get the chance to prove he can 'handle' things.  Poor Peeta's been dismembered and had important information withheld.  The poor guy needs some screen time!

#4:  I believe that Cinna is from District 13.  I like to think of District 13 as "The City of Ember," which is a great book if y'all've not read it.  I think that Cinna was a plant from the revolutionaries.  He has no distinguishable Capitol accent, and he makes a point of getting Katniss' mockingjay pin back to her at every turn of the story.  This is because he knows the mockingjay is the key to the revolution -- the mockingjay represents the will to live.

#5:  I think that the red-headed Avox and Darius will play a part in bringing Snow down.  I think that Snow personally did something to the red-headed Avox (whom in my head, I call Fiona.) and she has a right, more than most, to personally do him in.  I hope to see that.

#6:  I think that some of District 12 escaped to 13.  I think they did it via the mines.  How else would Gale have gotten them out? (read theory #1).  Though, I'm sure District 13 has a hovercraft of sorts.

#7:  I think Gale will end up with Madge.  Their brief encounter reminds me of Ron & Hermione in Goblet of Fire (THOUGH I DO NOT SUPPORT THAT SHIP.  THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT!).  I think that Madge knows a LOT more than she lets on.  Going back to my #1 -- if Haymitch & Madge's aunt went to the Games together, Madge got the Mockingjay pin and GIVES IT TO KATNISS, and Haymitch is in with the other Victors with this revolt thing ... I basically think that Madge knows what goes on in her father's study, and that she's a secret revolutionary (or has the heart of one) and she's prepared to fight for the best of it.  In this way, Gale and Madge are well-matched.  It's a snub that Gale would fall for a politician's child, however, you can't help who you love (read: Peeta Mellark).

#7A:  Something tells me to cherchez la femme in this one and suspect Madge Undersee's "migraine-ridden" mother.  Her identical twin went to the Games, right?  At the last Quarter Quell?  I think that Maysilee Donner's real identity could be questionable.

#8:  Unfortunately, Haymitch is going to have to bite it.  Maybe Mr. Mellark, too.  I can see Mellark, Sr. taking the place of his son in sacrificing himself for the woman he loves.  Mrs. Everdeen & Prim aren't safe, even if Gale got them out, and I think that Mr. Mellark is going to make a point in looking after them.  I also think that Finnick is going to die trying to get to Annie.  Collins gives us a GREAT character by way of Finnick in Catching Fire, however, as far as tributes go -- there can really only be one, right?  (Except when the Capitol allows for two.  Unfortunately, the ending would suck if Finnick and, say, Peeta were to survive.)  There's no way Annie's going to make it, and Finnick won't want to stick around for it.  He'll give the ultimate sacrifice.

#9:  I think that the Peacekeepers themselves might turn against the Capitol.  If Darius is the only Peacekeeping Avox, I'll eat my hat.

#10:  Finally, I think that Collins will leave it open.  We won't get a tidy, "Nineteen Years Later" bs.  I wouldn't be surprised if she ties it up, but not completely.  The purpose of this story, I think, will be to tell an epic love story, A, and B, tear down a tyrannical government.  We won't be seeing a utopia 20 years down the road.  At least I hope not.  I like things being left open, like Pride & Prejudice, Gone with the Wind, etc.

Please tell me what you think in the comments -- I'm wild to know!!
