I think rarely in a person's life does she experience a Guiness Book of World Records moment. Yesterday, during my break at school, I encountered such a moment. First, I am not in the practice of noting the size of animal's genitalia. I had arrived at school at 9:00am yesterday and wasn't able to take a break until 3:30 at which time I bought a ( Read more... )

I was going to write a post about this but I don't think too many people on my friendslist would care. But I saw Andrew WK last night. He played at this really small, shitty metal bar. I went with some friends and we all really stood out. I was assuming there would be other like-minded people who got the WK joke, but this was not the case. It was packed with teenagers in black hooded sweatshirts, and the smell of pot could be detected 20 feet from the entrance to the venue. The great thing was that AWK lets people get up onstage with him and sing lyrics, high-five and then stage dive. There was a swirling pit which I only got into once. I was standing there and then got kicked in the ear by this overly excited brazilian raver kid who kept trying to hang from the rafters of the ceiling. Some of my friends got really into it and got up onstage with AWK and stage-dived their hearts out. One of them was onstage, high-fived Andrew and then jumped backwards into the pit. As he was in the air falling backwards he looked at AWK and AWK gave him a thumbs up. It was really entertaining. One of my favorite things about AWK is that he says everything in his crazy metal voice, including birthday wishes. Like when he said, "IS PARKER IN THE HOUSE? I WANT EVERYBODY TO WISH PARKER A HAPPY BIRTHDAY! YOU ROCK PARKER!". At the end of the show he closed it out with "party hard" and about 20 people got up onstage with him. After the show we got into our car and then my friend Nick saw a pair of white pants and running shoes by the tour bus. We went over and AWK was lying down on the ground, totally exhausted. He said that his tour bus was locked and he couldn't get in. He asked everyone's name and shook all our hands. It was pretty sweet. I felt a little sorry for him though, he had a hard time coming up with stuff to say to us and kept asking about Chinatown. I wanted to take a photo with him but he looked completely exhausted. As we were driving home someone said that the great thing about AWK is that you can get up onstage and hug someone and then jump back into the pit and get rowdy. It's really the best of both worlds.

I had a similar experience when I went to see Andrew W.K. For awhile, I was obsessed - but it quickly fizzled, unfortunately. I used to read his website all the time. I love his W.K.isms and fables. Especially the story about the old woman feeding the cats. He's one of the few people that seems genuinely happy to be wherever he's at.
