Desire is Not Happy.
The Endless does not return to the Threshold, instead choosing to walk in the world and purge some of the rising temper.
A couple engaged to be married next week strain to the breaking point and snap as Desire passes them, anger lingering like the trail of cigarette smoke. She throws her ring at him, and it bounces along the street and into a gutter.
When Desire chooses the club to drink in, someone is knifed in the alley for looking at the wrong girl. Death does not have to work, but it is a near thing.
The Endless drinks, crowd-watching. There is a young man, married five years to his childhood sweetheart, one point five kids. He's out with his friends: They're too drunk to notice they left without him, and he's too hammered to care. Out of Desire's spite, he wakes up the next morning in a strange man's bed. He's never been anything but straight before, and his wedding band is lost. The experience delivers him to Despair.
At last call, a couple who have nothing in common except a liking for tequila shots leave together. They will attempt to be with each other for the next three weeks, until they realize they really can't stand each other.
There are others.
Desire leaves a wake of shattered relationships across the night, staving off the desire to do the same to hisherits own.
