Well - haven't written in here for a while, and one of my friends just got herself a journal here, so it seems a good time to say something or other.
Reviewing, it looks like I haven't said anything about my new job. :) Suffice it to say I'm no longer working at the motorpool - which is great. Many of the people I worked with there were great - and are good friends. Many of the people I worked with there were not.
The new job is as a driver/assistant for a VIP - I won't say anything more than that about the details, because it isn't good OPSEC (Operational Security) in a public journal. However - I can talk a bit about the perks and drawbacks. :)
Upside - I get a lot more free time. I have specific tasks I have to accomplish, along with my counterpart - but when those tasks are complete, we are left fairly well alone to take care of personal business and manage our time. So - during the week I tend to have a good deal of free time to spend e-mailing or talking to people back home, working on career-advancement, etc.
In addition, as a driver, I get to drive all sorts of awesome places here in Korea - meaning that I'm finally learning my way around to all the other camps, and I'm getting to see more of the country - hense the influx of new pictures on my
photo book (I try to add some every few days when I have something to add and I'm not in the field).
Downside - The days when I have a tasking (like today) I tend to work long hours which start early in the morning and go until late evening. However - I definitely think that the free time noted above easily makes up for this in the grand scheme of things. It's been a long time since I was this happy in a job.
Unfortunately, if I get lost on a driving mission, or miss a turn - I feel like an ass - especially if it adversely affects the boss getting somewhere on time or something. So... getting a "chance" to learn all the routes from place to place is counterpointed by having to know them before I've ever been there sometimes... I've only had one particularly bad experience in that regard so far, though, out of 2 months or so of having this job. So I think I'm doing pretty good.
Other things...
I sent a Mother's Day e-mail to my dad's fiancee... I'm not sure if that's proper etiquette or not, but it seemed appropriate at the time. I hope she doesn't feel awkward about it or anything...
Mom also hasn't responded since I sent her card to her for Mother's Day - so I'm not sure if she got it or not. :\ Waiting to hear back still.
And - of course - the Army is being SO incredibly slow with my paperwork for my extension, that at this point I'm liable to get put on orders before it gets approved - which would be a nightmare. I'm about to have to ask the Colonel to make some calls on my behalf to get my papers expedited. :\ It should NEVER be that hard.
Anyway - more to come later when I have more to write.
