“What?” Sherlock’s eyes widened as the words John just said hit him. He had not seen that kind of question coming.
“Will you marry me?” John repeated, looking at Sherlock with a hopeful expression. He knew this was a shot in the dark (the metaphorical firing arm in this case probably being the tiniest gun known to man, most unlikely to hit anything), but he had decided to propose anyway.
Sherlock was sprawled out on the sofa, John lying against his chest. They had been watching a detective series TV, but they both got bored of it, as Sherlock had already predicted who was the murderer.
The question had come completely out of the blue.
“Marry you?” Sherlock asked, shifting a bit so he could get a better look at John’s face. Was he joking? He blinked a couple of times, looking at John’s face. No, definitely not joking. Surely after having known each other for more than three years, John must have known Sherlock wasn’t the marrying type. He was sure that he at least expressed his opinion about marriage once or twice. Sherlock believed that weddings were useless and a waste of time and money. He even hated going to them, so really, why did John even bother to ask?
“Yes, Sherlock, marry me.” John nodded, still staring at the other man. “I suppose you are familiar with the concept,” he added, raising an eyebrow. John was convinced now that Sherlock was going to say ‘no’. But at least he had tried.
“I am.” Sherlock frowned. If he’d say ‘yes’, he would be in his own person hell while planning the wedding and during the wedding itself. He would also be doing something he didn’t believe in. If he’d say ‘no’, he would most likely break John’s heart and deprive him of something he wanted (even so much that he’d actually asked Sherlock while knowing how he felt about it). So the real question here wasn’t whether or not he wanted to marry John. The question he needed to answer was: who did he love the most, himself or John?
The hope in John’s eyes slowly faded away. He tried to hide his disappointment because he didn’t want Sherlock to feel bad about saying no, but it showed anyway, especially to a man like Sherlock who noticed every little change.
“Yes,” Sherlock said, taking John’s hand in his own, giving a soft squeeze. “I will marry you.”
Now it was John’s turn to look surprised. “What?” he asked in disbelief.
“Yes,” Sherlock said again. He knew he was going to regret this, but at least John would be happy. “It’s a very common answer given to a marriage proposal. Or so I’ve heard.”
John lunged forward and pressed his lips against Sherlock.
Sherlock placed his left hand against John’s cheek and kissed him hard. When he pulled away, he was smiling. “No flowers, though. And I get to decide what I wear. And we are not inviting Mycroft, he’ll never make me forget that I’m engaged, let alone actually marrying. Can we not tell him about this? He’ll be unbearable if he finds out.”
John pressed his index finger against Sherlock’s lips to silence him and then he kissed him again. Their wedding was probably going to be the strangest wedding to have ever happened. If it were up to Sherlock they’d probably do it at a crime scene or at the science lab. But it was going to happen and that was all he wanted.
