The boy was sitting on one of the benches at the left side of the playground. It was a spot that gave him the opportunity to see everything that was. He would know who had pushed who or who had taken whose candy or who had been kissing who. This was the spot where you were most likely to find the seven-year-old Sherlock Holmes. Just watching things and thinking.

Today however, he wasn’t watching. He was sitting on the bench with his arms crossed in front of his chest, staring down at his feet. And there wasn’t a thing about his feet that he didn’t know yet, so they really weren’t worth looking at. For once he seemed to be completely uninterested in what was happening around him.

“Are you sad?” John, Sherlock’s only good friend, flopped down next to him. He frowned. Sherlock was supposed to be looking, he was supposed to be talking about things no one else noticed. “Sherlock?” John put a hand on the taller boy’s shoulder. “Did something bad happen to you?”

Sherlock looked at John, pouting a little bit. “The model I made of the solar system was all wrong,” he said and then he returned to staring at his shoes. “I put the sun somewhere it doesn’t belong.” How was he supposed to know the earth moved around the sun? He was sure he was thinking about more interesting things the day their teacher had taught them about the solar system. “It was stupid of me.”

“You’re not stupid,” John replied, shaking his head. “I can help you make a new model,” he suggested. “If you want.”

A rare smile crept onto Sherlock’s face. “Really?”

John nodded in reply. “Of course.”

“Thank you.” Sherlock raised his head and started looking again. It took him less than a minute to come to the conclusion that Timmy had stolen Sam’s lollipop and that he had keeping it in his pocket so he could eat it when he got back home. He also noticed that Suzy was no longer a couple with Nick. She was kissing Patrick behind the tree! Oh, the scandal.

For the rest of the lunch break Sherlock kept on talking to John about the things he saw.

John just smiled, happy that his friend was acting normal again. As normal as Sherlock could act anyway.
