Cull-cha

A few weeks ago Mr M and I went to the Griffin Photography Museum in Winchester. We saw a very interesting exhibit on Photographs of Ellis Island. Haunting stuff. In the lobby I picked up a postcard for an exhibit of night photography happening in Cambridge, at a place called the 3 Columns Gallery.
With some research, I determined that the 3 Columns Gallery is part of Harvard University. It is located in a building called Mather House.
Even better, the gallery is open to the public seven days a week, from 8 am to 8 pm. Since it was so convenient, Mr M and I visited it Tuesday night.
I haven't explored much of Harvard University beyond the yard. I've been to the Business School and the Law School and the Divinity School, but I haven't walked around just looking at buildings, and I haven't been inside many buildings. Between Mass Ave and the river, I just take JFK St. But it turns out there are a whole bunch of interesting old academic buildings, and some cute houses, and some weird monolithic structures. Mather House was one of the weird monolithic structures. There were peculiar alcoves and courtyards and beams and windows, and columns in the middle of a lobby like areas. This was the 3 Columns Gallery. There was art on the columns, and on the walls, and pieces were hung on various levels so you had to climb the stairs and look at the art from different angles to really see it. It was a very well hung exhibit--it really took advantage of the space. And the subject was fascinating. There were really cool color effects from the long exposures, and very spooky lighting. Some artists painted with light, creating odd shapes.
Even though the visit to Mather house happened on the first day of April, in my mind it is the culmination of a month of a lot of wonderful art viewing. It started on March 7th with the First Friday gallery openings in the south End. The next day was the Griffin Museum. Two weeks later Ms H and I spent the day on Newbury St, looking at galleries and indulging my taste for aht and crumpets. Last weekend I returned to the South End to show Mr M an exhibit at the Bernard Toale Gallery, and then we checked out a show on global warming at the Mills Gallery.
Tomorrow is the April First Friday gallery openings, and a new month of art begins. It would be ok with me if it were a little less full of visual splendor--keeping up with the arts in the Boston area is exhausting!
