opm guilty pleasures

After a whirlwind month of 14-hour days and weekend shoots, I get some downtime. Our office is moving from the Enterprise Center to the Equitable PCI Tower along Paseo. So while the movers are transporting all our stuff, we're taking a week free--one rest day at home before we leave for a three-day junket in Ho Chi Minh City.

I wasn't about to be lethargic for my only free day in town. I decided to go to the Makati City Hall to pay the amilyar of my apartment, then I had my apartment thoroughly cleaned. So while the building cleaning boy--a very amiable, maasikaso and efficient bading named joey--was scrubbing my grimy bathroom, I decided to make a playlist. I've compiled all the OPM songs I've listened to for three decades. A lot of them, unabashedly mushy, but nevertheless meaningful. Very handy when I get tired of my "paris en hiver" and "best of hed kandi" and "hotel costes" playlists.

It's a list of 85 songs. A lot of them rare. Like this lost classic "My Love" by Vernie Varga. Thanks to my friend Leo who converted his record to cd format, (possibly the only remaining copy of the recording), I can now enjoy it on my ipod, with popcorn sounds all over the place, but that's ok. Another Vernie find is the original version of "Kahit Isang Saglit" which, in my opinion, is the best rendition of this Louie O favorite.

Gary V's recording of Randy Crawford's "One Hello" as well as Jaya's "Away From You" taken from the crossover 105.1 compilation made it to the list. Also Basil Valdez's medley of "Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan/Paano Ba Ang Mangarap" re-orchestrated by Ryan Cayabyab for a Piltel Christmas giveaway.

I've skipped Sharon's overplayed Tala Series for her lesser known but equally important "Hagkan" and "Langis at Tubig". (Although I've managed to include Regine's version of "Pangarap na Bituin"--quite an improvement from the original.)

And oh the songs I've loved in high school. Odette Quesada's "It's a Crazy Feeling... Love Is". Ric Segretto's "Give Me A Chance". Martin Nievera's "Pain" and "How Can I". Apo Hiking's "When I Met You." Chona Cruz's "Working Girl". Gary V's "Love Of Mine." Basil's "You". Joey Albert's "Tell Me"

Funny how it also includes tacky yet endearing songs from the seventies: Rico J. Puno's "Cartada Diyes" and Hajji Alejandro's "Tag-Araw, Tag-Ulan". Not to mention Leah Navarro's songs I often listened to on the old 99.5RT--"Totoo Bang Lahat Ito" and "Let Me Fly".

Any of you guys want copies, just let me know.
