Detox Diet

From October 19, 2008:

Today is day 7 of me detox. I don’t remember if I ever wrote about this but I figure today is as good as any. This past December was the first time I went “home” for Christmas. Its not that I haven’t spent all my holidays at home, but this past year was the first year that I had moved significantly far enough from home that it was a big event. In the past, I was always either at home or a hop and a skip away from home.

This was a new experience for me. All of a sudden, going holidays weren’t just about spending time with my family. It was also about seeing all the friends who still live there that I no longer see on a regular basis. On top of that, holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving also become times when I look to see friends who have also moved away, but are also home for the holidays. That leaves three distinct groups that I now try to split my time amongst. Suffice to say, these are good times and much celebrating is involved.

I found myself on New Years Day considering the past two weeks I spent at home. Every time I went to see a friend, or got together with another group, there was alcohol involved. I tallied it up in my head and I’m fairly certain that for the two weeks I was home, there wasn’t one day that I didn’t at least have one drink. It always seems to be the best bet when seeing old friends. Sure I could go get coffee with them or tea, but that really was never my style (I’m not much of a coffee drinker). On top of that, there are only really 3 distinct meals that you can share with folks. Breakfast tends to be too early, and I’d like to spend as much time having good home cooking as I can. Thus, it goes without saying that dropping by the local waterhole for a mid day cocktail, an evening beer with sports, or visiting all my favorite bars and breweries that I used to frequent, becomes my everyday activity.

I during that bowl game watching party, surrounded by beer, sausage, and sauerkraut, I decided that I needed to take a break.
