I'm sitting in the dressing room, and as I type this it's one hour and fourty-five minutes until we open the show.
Lindsay is running around doing some prep things, Kim is digging through her bag so she can plug in her phone somewhere. Good that it's in the green room and not in the theatre. Niki's phone is buzzing every minute or so with a message alarm, Kevin's watching (I think) some TV in his own dressing space, and Sarah's got some coffee and walking around in super hot boots.
There's a big pile of flowers & opening night gifts all over the place here. Kim's are in wee little purple bags. I don't do opening night gifts, I tend to do closing night ones, if anything. Or I just bring little things throughout the run. Usually for opening nights I get given booze. Which just goes to show, while I do have somewhat of a reputation in this community, it's not as a non-drinker. My friend stef once told me that around Passe Muraille I was known as the "Guy Who Doesn't Go To Things" - opening night parties, theatre events, nights in the shop with the drinking and the guitars and whatnot. Someone else referred to me as the Best Dressed SM in the city - for some reason, whenever I do a tech call, even if it's about painting, I never get any mess on my clothes.
This is a tough show to run. I'm operating lights, sound and video. Michael, the PM of the space, is around to run one of the boards if I wanted him to, but it's a strange thing... I always feel like I'm more connected with a show when I have my hands on the board. When there's the option, I'll always run something myself. Usually lights, but now I can run sound through my laptop. I wonder how many other SM's in this city work with the same amount of gear that I do? Are there other paperless stage managers? Is anyone else horrifically sick of carrying around gigantic binders?
