I've just read this
article which makes me want to keep a donkey. The author portrays donkeys to have characteristics of a dog-horse hybrid. I'm more of a cat person myself but right now, donkeys sound marvelous.
In the article, the author mentions a cat uniquely named 'Mother' and I found an
article on her. He says: "She was young and scrawny and got her name-Mother-from her habit of caring for kittens, whether they were hers or not". The funny thing is, in the donkey article, she appeared when "(the author) came into the barn and saw (Mother) curled up next to the baby, both of them dozing comfortably on a pile of straw bedding". Apparently, she doesn't just care for her 'kind'. Any baby will do. Mother really encompasses some of the values that mothers should possess.
Here's a picture of Mother. Quite an ugly and dull looking thing isn't she? But in an odd way... the more you look at her the more she grows on you. Just like fungi!
The most touching part of the article is the end where the author says: "Once in a while, when I take out the garbage or leave the dogs behind to stroll under a full moon, Mother appears at my side and strolls along with me. "Hey, Mother," I say. She never looks directly at me. She walks with her tail up, her eyes sweeping the darkness. Sometimes, I think she is keeping me company. And sometimes I get the feeling she is watching over me." It just tugs at my heart strings. A cat that's so tough that even the dogs avoid her but at the end of the day, she just wants to make sure that you're alright.
Alrighty then. That's enough of my disjointed ramblings of the four-legged kind. Till next time...
