Poetic Interlude I

Aug 06, 2003 00:19

Here is a poem I wrote between July & October 1994. (Bear with me, it's a bit long.)

Masks

There is a man who wears a mask
A mask of a single smile
No matter what should come his way
The smile will remain.

That man will also wear a mask
Of a simple frown
That frown stays with him throughout the day
No need to change betrayed.

I know a man who wears a mask
Many for each day
And I truly wish to know
The man behind the mask.

That man will wear a mask of gold
If golden be his crowd
Through that mask there is no way
His feelings will be betrayed.

If he should wear a mask of taint
Though his heart is fresh and pure
Tainted he will seem to all
His purity is in vain.

Just as mother told you
About these masks of clay
If you wear them for too long
Your face will stay that way.

I am a man of many masks
Many for each day
One thing I will always know
To change my mask each day.

When I wear a mask
Of the purest white
An angel I'll appear to all
Though a devil lurks inside.

This is a warning
About wearing the masks
They have a special power
To blend the soul away.

Your masks will remove your soul
Out of everyone's view
It will be hidden so very well
That your soul will fade away.

I am a man of many masks
I wear them every day
I wore my masks for so long
My soul has faded away.

I have forgotten what lay behind
These masks I do wear
My soul has become lost to me
I am truly in despair.

I am a man of many masks
Many for each day
And no one will e'er truly know
What lay behind my mask.

For behind these masks I wear
Is such a hideous sight
I shudder to think that someone will see
When I take my mask off at night.

The reason I wear thees masks
Is only half because of me
The rest is due to you
You force them upon me.

You do not wish to see
A certain part of me
You force me to hide it from your view
If I'm to join your company.

I am a man of many masks
Masks you force me to wear
You've hidden little pieces of me
Will anyone e'er see them again?

I have one mask remaining
Between my friend and I
It covers not my face nor mind
But my heart and my soul.

Everyone wears many masks
Different yet the same
Remove yours while you still can
And let others do the same.
