Everyone else celebrates anniversaries with SOs or spouses. I celebrate with my horse.
Today is the 2-year anniversary of the day that Sonic arrived, snorting and stomping and bucking off the trailer. He was scruffy with a thick winter coat, he had a mane almost to his shoulders, and his tail was a bit scraggly. And he had one hell of a 'tude. But other than that, he was in pretty good shape - the folks at ReRun took good care of him, and he was fortunate to have had a good, fair trainer when he was a race horse both at Delaware and Belmont.
It has been an amazing two years, some of it frustrating (you CAN bend, you CAN steer, PLEASE keep your shoes on!), but most of it wonderful and inspiring as I watched a horse who didn't give much of a hoot about people blossom into the charismatic, happy treat-hog that he is now.
When I think about that first ride, where his tail was flipped over his back like an arab and he was an inch away from bolting, to the difference now - a well muscled, magnificent creature who enjoys his job and is eager to learn and grow, who has accepted the bit and now not only steers, but has also begun to develop a work ethic that makes him a pleasure....well. Sometimes it even makes me tear up a little. I know my Mom DID cry when she saw how far he had come.
And we'll get even further...the possibilities of what he and I can do together are endless.
Sonic is my best friend, the light of my life. No matter how bad things get, I know that I can go and see him and everything will be okay. Everything WILL be okay, because when all else fails, I really am just about the luckiest girl alive - I have my little red horse with a heart of gold. He is naughty sometimes, he has mood swings, we have arguments about things under saddle, but at the end of the day every time he sees me, his little ears perk up and he looks delighted.
I don't know where I would be without him. Here's to another 20 years or more where these two came from. :)
