The worst thing is, I remember having a conversation with people back in 1989 about this, where we all agreed exactly with what you said above, and there are STILL people arguing with it.

I get that every once in a while too. it's infuriating. Although there have been times when the third person has said something like "Oh really? Me too!"
which makes things a little bit better.
