Everyone's a little bit racist...

Racists suck. But stupid racists are hilarious. Case in point: there is a conservative hate group that is actually hating on the upcoming Marvel movie Thor (our May Movie, folks!). Not because the trailer made it look like another $200M exercise in mediocrity. (True fact: at least half that budget was spent on replacing sets that Anthony Hopkins ( Read more... )

Ah, this group is a descendant of the old White Citizens Council, the "respectable" anti-desegregation group (as opposed to the declasse Klan).

Wow, so they're really, really bootleg Klansmen? Why am I not surprised?

Yeah, these guys are extreme even for modern-day conservative groups. I'm sure a lot of right-wingers will denounce Idris Elba's casting as "political correctness gone amok" or something like that. But boycotting the movie? Saying it's a threat to America's "European-American heritage"? To blatant for mainstream conservatives.

I would think so. These guys make it hard for people to spout off what is actually racist talk ("political correctness gone amok" is code for "We want more white people, not less, in our movies" in this case) as if it's not, in fact, racist. Which it is.

Of course, reactionary trolls got all over the threads for the articles about this going, "Oh? How come we have to take it when you put a black guy in for a white guy, but cast all the kids as white in the Last Airbender movie and suddenly it's raaaaaacism!!!!????"

To which I rightly reply with :P

See, there was nothing inherently wrong with casting white kids for Last Airbender--the problem was that they apparently were only cast for being white, since their acting made Tommy Wiseau look talented by comparison. Race blind casting works both ways, yes?

But anyways, the Conservative Citizens Council is conservative like the Westboro Baptist Church is baptist. I object to the implications of the phrase "conservative hate group," in that these guys are just Klansmen with no place in the American political discourse.

Their politics are conservative. Fine, point taken, I won't (not that I was) lump them in with all people right of center (who are all technically conservative).

But, dude? THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU. Relaaaaaaax.
