MREs-a look inside the pouch!

So, my dad just got back from Nicaragua. (For the record, I kind of wish I could start every story like that.) He was down there shooting footage for a documentary aboard a Naval vessel (or so he claims. With his mild-mannered personality and the amount of wacky travel he does, it wouldn't surprise me if he were actually an International Man of ( Read more... )

That beef stew looks pretty much exactly like the meal that Aer Lingus served me on the way back from Chicago. Only with less gristle.

I've always said that flying Aer Lingus and doing field operations are about the same! But did you get pound cake of DEATH when you were through?

No, I got the world's tiniest piece of cheesecake-but that, too, was lemon-flavoured! Rodney McKay would not have been impressed.

The beef stew isn't so bad. The vegetarian choices are indeed of evil and there is a reason why there is a serving of Tabasco sauce (everything can be made bearable with Tabasco - except the pasta alfredo, that shit is vile).

If I remember correctly (and I may not, it's been years since my military experience [it's a long story]), you only get peanut butter OR cheese OR cheese with jalapeno.

My Dad used to get MRE's for his Boy Scouts hiking trips all the time. He would always have to hide them from me because I would steal them. I personally loved the Spaghetti and Mac and Cheese the most.

I too like Airline and Hospital food. :/

Necklace love bb, necklace LOVE.

Best MRE photo essay ever!

I used to date a military guy. I have eaten old-style MREs. They were icky. I think they have been much improved.

My dad's Navy friend agrees-he says they've gotten much better in the last few years. I'm glad you enjoyed!

The newer ones are much better. I'm old enough to remember the ham steak and the omelet, both of which were ... disgusting barely begins to cover it, actually.

The beef stew was always pretty good and the chilimac wasn't bad with enough tabasco.
