Summary: Megumi learns the truth about her paramour and faces a difficult choice: duty or her heart.
Wataru was surprise when there was a knock at the door. It was too late at night for Shizuka to be out. But, after the knock continued, the possibility came to him that it could be the only other person who visited him at his home; Megumi Aso, Wataru’s semi-new girlfriend. Grinning, he put away his tools and eagerly headed for the door, almost running as he called “Just a moment!”
His heart gave a joyous leap when he opened the door and found Megumi, holding what looked like a picnic basket, standing there. “Megumi…” He turned almost shy for a moment. “I’d hoped that was you.”
“Who else would it be?” She asked, grinning. The couple had been together for almost three months and Megumi was now a regular guest at the atelier. He’d grown to enjoy her company and could even feel himself falling in love with her. She held up the picnic basket. “I just finished a shoot nearby, so I went to a sushi bar and brought you some dinner. I thought you might be hungry.”
Wataru smiled. “Oh, you didn’t have to go to all this trouble…”
“Don’t silly.” She told him as she breezed passed him into the house. “I didn’t bother you, did I?”
“Oh, no… never.” He told her with a grin, closing the door behind her. “I’ll make some iced tea. Why don’t you go up into the atrium? I’ll be up in a few minutes.” Before he left, he looked at her again. “I was hoping you’d take a break and come see me. I… I have something I want you to listen to.”
She gave him a surprised expression. “Something?” An eyebrow was raised. “What sort of something?”
“It’s a surprise.” He told her. “Go up and wait. I’ll be there in a bit.”
As Megumi ascended into the atrium, her mind was awash with possibilities. What could her paramour have for her? Perhaps it was something very, very special… She giggled. That was just like him.
The atrium was lit by the full moon’s light, but to give it a bit more of a romantic touch, she’d lit some candles and when Wataru returned with iced white tea, he was surprised by how much more inviting the room seemed. “What sort of sushi is this?” He asked, trying not to laugh. “It’s not like that aphrodisiac platter we had last week, is it?”
“Oh, no, no… nothing like that.” She plopped down on the plush couch and began to unpack some sushi trays. “Just sashimi and California rolls. Nothing too fancy, since it was kind of late. I had to BEG the chef to make it fresh. But the salmon and squid at this place is really top notch.”
Wataru poured the glasses and sat down across from her. “You got decent sashimi this late?”
She picked up a piece of salmon and stuck it in his mouth. “Chew and then you’ll see.” She almost burst out laughing at the surprised expression he gave her. He apparently was not expecting that. He stared at her for a moment. “Chew, Wataru! CHEW!”
A pause and Wataru chewed. The salmon was delicious. “Oh… it, ah… it IS good….” He half stammered. “Do you have anything else?”
Megumi presented him with shrimp, octopus, salmon, egg, tuna and a whole host of other treats and they commenced with eating their impromptu sushi dinner.
An hour or so later, Wataru vanished for a moment before returning to her with the Bloody Rose in one hand and his bow in the other. “I wrote a piece for you.”
“You… you write music?” Megumi was shell-shocked. She had now idea that Wataru was so talented. “For the violin?”
“Yes…” Wataru gave her a slow nod. “…I ah, have been working on this… I remembered what you said about everyone having music inside them. I wanted to see if I could put to paper what your music sounded like.”
She was touched. She could not believe that he would attempt that or even remember what he had said. She felt bad for being so… off with him before, but they had come quite a long way from the first time they’d met… “Can… can I hear it?”
Wataru nodded slowly again. “I… I called it… ‘Megumi’s Waltz’… I wanted your name to be on it… are you sure you want to hear it?”
She was pink. “Of COURSE, I want to hear it!” No one had ever written anything like that for her before.
He put his bow to the strings and the melody of a beautiful, almost sensuous, but very powerful in some aspects, song, sort of like the “Waltz of Sleeping Beauty”, came out. It was spellbinding in some ways and Megumi sat on the plush couch, mesmerized. This song sounded almost exactly like what she imagined her own music to be, but there was the touch of Wataru’s growing affection for her that made it even more special. He’d put love into this… and she wasn’t sure what she should be more impressed about: the fact that he’d wrote it in the first place, or how much it showed when he played it that he loved her.
Once he’d finished, they locked eyes for the longest moment before Wataru gently set the violin down and turned to look out the window. “I take it that you enjoyed it.”
“That was incredibly beautiful.” She murmured, getting up and embracing him from behind. “I can’t believe you wrote that for me.”
“I… I… I’m not a rich man or anything or particularly handsome or like any of those other guys who chase you… but… I still wanted to show you how I felt… and music… was the only thing I felt I could do…” He was red. “I…” He wasn’t sure if he should be saying this after three months. “I... I love you, Megumi!”
She paused, but then she smiled. “I know.” She kissed him then, soft and gentle and he seemed to relax. Sometimes it showed that he didn’t spend a lot of time around others, especially when he spoke, but that was okay. That was part of his charm.
Just then, as suddenly as the kiss began, it ended. Wataru uncharacteristically pushed her from him and turned away.
“What’s wrong?” Megumi was alarmed. “Wataru, are you sick?”
He hunched over, ducking to the floor, trying to avoid Megumi’s face. “Don’t come any closer, Megumi…” She murmured. “I don’t want you to see…”
She was alarmed. “See what?” Megumi almost screamed. “Wataru, what is it?”
“Please, Megumi…” He pleaded.
She would not leave him. “Wataru…” She touched his shoulder. “Please, look at me and let me know you’re all right.”
A moment of silence and he slowly turned to face her.
Megumi screamed.
Wataru’s face had taken on a sort of stained glass appearance and he was staring at her with wounded eyes. “Megumi…”
“Fangaria!” She cried, almost pulling her gun from her pocket. “Impossible!”
“My mother… was a Fangaria.” He murmured. “My father was… he was human. I only remember my mother… Please Megumi. I’ve… I can’t… I can’t hurt anyone. This is why I live alone…”
Megumi felt a sense of duty. It was her job to get rid of the Fangaria, but… Wataru had never hurt anyone. She knew that he wasn’t evil like the others. There was no way she could get rid of the man she was falling for. It didn’t sit right with her. But she knew that if Nago were to ever find out… “I know… but, Wataru…” She pulled out her gun and aimed. “… This is something I must do.”
Wataru’s expression grew even more pained and he nodded. “I… I understand.” He closed his eyes and waited.
But Megumi couldn’t do it. She could not make herself pull the trigger. Wataru was a gentle soul, incapable of hurting a fly. Killing him… would be a senseless crime, Fangaria or not. He was not dangerous! He’d come to save her. Why would he have done that if he were evil? Her eyes grew wet and she embraced him, sobbing into his chest. “I… I’ll never tell. I’ll keep your secret… because I know you would never cause me pain.”
Wataru froze, but he slowly embraced her back, unable to speak.
Nago lowered his binoculars. This was not good. “I’ll have to do something about Wataru.” He muttered. “This will not be tolerated…”
