Dean followed John into the other room to see what had happened to the sigil. Mary was still reeling from the revelation that she somehow produced these two grown men. They were, quite frankly, scary. When she pictured her future children, she thought of lawyers, doctors, teachers...not average, just normal. These men were anything but "normal". Her sons were hunters, soldiers, through and through.

Sam was bending down to check on the holy oil. Seemingly concentrating on what he was doing, Sam said "On November 2, 1983 you are going to walk into my nursery and die. A demon will pin you to the ceiling, slice you open, and burn you to death."

Fear raced through her system. "Why..." but in her heart she knew. She had made a deal with a demon after all. Ten years it had said. "What was it doing? What did it want?"

Sam finally looked up, and the guilt and sorrow she saw made her catch her breath. "Me. You die because the demon wants me."

Sam glanced down at her stomach. "Please, when that baby is born I want you to look at him and remember that another son will destroy his life. You will die, your husband will become a hunter, and Dean will never have a chance at normal."

"But...you....what about you?"

Sam looked her in the eye and gave her a small, sad smile. "Once I am born there is no stopping it. The demon will come. And believe me, there is nothing good after that. For anybody. Think about everyone you know. They are going to die. The demon is going to kill them all to cover his tracks. And that's just the beginning"

There were tears in his eyes as he said "You can prevent it all, save countless lives, just by making sure you only have one son."

This couldn't be happening. And yet every instinct she had told her that he was telling the truth. Her grown son was standing in front of her asking not to be born. She knew him now, had a face to go with the concept of "son". She could just picture him as a child. How could she sentence him to...what? Nothingness?

Her mind rewound to that day five years ago. She remembered holding John's body while the demon taunted her into saying yes, making that deal. Now she knew what he wanted, and she also knew that the cost was more than anything she could have imagined. Her son. When she gave that yellow-eyed bastard her permission she had assumed that she would be the one to pay, that he would come for something from her. How stupid and naive she had been. The demon might kill her in the future, but that was nothing compared to the knowledge that she had given her son to him. That her son would pay the price for her selfishness.

He must have seen the horror in her face because he quickly sought to reassure her "No no no, it's not your fault. Please don't think I blame you for anything. I have never blamed you for it. You didn't know. But now you do, and I'm begging you. Don't give the demon what he wants. You'll have John, a great son, and the normal life you want...."

Mary interrupted, "But you'll have nothing."

"That's not a bad thing. It's better than what I have now."
