Dear GOP
I've heard a lot from Senator McCain, Governor Palin, and the talking heads over the course of this campaign. I've heard the "this is the real America" and the like. I've heard the comments that Senator Obama isn't "like you and me". I can't help but wonder if you are trying to divide this country. I'm as American as they come. I was born in Texas. I served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged. My parents were born in Texas. My grandparents. My great grandparents. In fact, I have to go back more than 100 years before I find one of my relatives who immigrated from Ireland to come to this country for a better life. I don't understand how someone is "more American" or a "real American". Just what does that mean? I'm confused.
I'm a history buff. My favorite parts of history are the Civil War and World War II. You might remember the Civil War. One of the greatest presidents in United States history was president then. Oh yea, he also happened to be a Republican.
I want to remind you of one of his great speeches. I think it's important because you seem to be hell-bent on dividing this country.
A little history on the speech. Abraham Lincoln gave this speech on June 16, 1858, when he was accepting the nomination of his party as the Senator from Illinois.
There's really only one line I want to point out, but so I don't take it out of context, I'll give a few lines before and after.
If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could better judge what to do, and how to do it. We are now far into the fifth year since a policy was initiated with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation. Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only not ceased, but has constantly augmented. In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved -- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new -- North as well as South.
Yes, he was talking about slavery, but his words are so true. "A house divided against itself cannot stand."
My point is that the campaign is seeking to divide this country. We are not the Divided States of America. We are the UNITED States of America. No matter who wins the election next week, we are going to have to unite in order to bring this country back together. I sure hope, that if Senator McCain and Governor Palin win that you have a plan on how to undo all the division that has been done during the campaign. See, people don't typically forgive and forget so quickly. It will take a lot of work to undo what has been done.
I sure hope you have a plan.
Sincerely,
Me, a REAL American and Veteran
P.S. You can read his entire speech
here. The part I quoted was the first paragraph.
