Summary: Part 3 in my AU Leoben/Kara/Sam series, follows on from "All the men and women merely players" and "Crisis". Leoben and Kara think they're going crazy. Head!Kara and Sam provide some answers.

Leoben hardly dared to sleep any more. Every time he closed his eyes, he found himself pulled into the same vivid dream - a strange dream, in which he recognised both Sam and Kara, though they were not the same as the people he knew.

In the dream, Leoben was a cylon. He had not one dream-self, but many. In the dream, Sam barely knew who he was and Kara... he had no words for the relationship between himself and Kara. Sometimes she seemed to hate him. That, at least, he found familiar.

His plan to sleep as little as possible did not work for long. The other Kara, the one who was seen and heard only by him, seemed to want him to experience the dream. Somehow she turned the dream into a vision that she sent to him whenever she chose.

If the population of Galactica hadn't thought he was crazy before, they did then.

Kara knew how he felt. She thought she was going crazy as well. She'd tried to tell herself it was the shock of what had happened to the other Kara.

But shock didn't explain the dream she'd been having. The dream where she was married to Sam, but a Sam who wasn't her Sam, and had some weird, totally frakked-up thing with a Leoben who wasn't quite the one she knew. And it didn't explain the drawings she'd been making - the same mandala pattern, over and over again, doodled idly on whatever paper was nearby.

After a few days of trying everything she could think of to get the dream out of her head, Kara gave up and did the thing she hadn't wanted to do... she went back to Leoben's quarters and knocked loudly on the door. She half-hoped that he wouldn't answer, so she could leave, but he opened the door and stared at her blearily.

“Lieutenant.”

“You look terrible.”

He sighed. “I haven't slept much.” That piqued her interest.

“Bad dream?”

“Not bad, no. Just...” he tried to finish the sentence, couldn't, and shrugged helplessly. “Can I help you?”

“Maybe you can. I've been having this dream...”

Without a word, he showed her in, and she told him about her dream. As she finished, her gaze fell on a crumpled piece of paper on the floor. She picked it up and straightened it out, then dropped it when she saw what was on it: the same mandala she'd been drawing.

“Where did you see this?”

“I don't know. It came into my head one day.”
“I've been drawing this for days. It was in my dream.”

Leoben frowned. He became aware that the other Kara was standing, invisible to her double, just beside him. She looked at the drawing.

“You know what this means, right?”

Leoben glared at her, willing her to be quiet, but she ignored him.

“You know what's going on here, don't you? The two of you, you're bound together somehow....”

“Shut up,” he hissed, as quietly as possible.

Lieutenant Thrace looked up at him. “What?”

“Uh... nothing. What were you saying?”

“I was just wondering what was going on. That's kind of why I'm here. I hoped you'd be able to help.”

“I know a little...” he started.

“Better than nothing,” she said with a weak grin.

“I.. I believe that these dreams... are a sign, from who I don't know, but the signs seem to say that for some reason, our destinies are bound together, no matter what.”

“What do we do about it?”

“I don't think there's anything we can do. Just watch what happens and see where fate takes us.”

“What if I don't like that?”

He shrugged. “Destiny. You don't generally get a choice.”

They heard a knock on the door, and all three of them - Leoben, Kara, and her invisible counterpart - turned, and saw Sam slip in, looking agitated.

“Good, you're here,” he said to Kara, “I was... I have some things to talk to you guys about.”

“Weird dream, huh?” Kara said. “We know. We had them too.”

“...oh.”

“I believe the dream is a sign that our destinies are all bound together. I don't know what this means for us.”

Sam grinned. “I do. Well, part of it, anyway...” he said as he stepped closer to Kara and kissed her. Then he took Leoben's hand in his and said, “It's us. For whatever reason, the three of us are meant to be together.”
